There's a paid version too

Google Maps works just fine with headphones for me, on the rare occasion that I use it. I normally just try and memorise the routes.

If you've got data to use: waze. You get live updates from others users of hazards like vehicles in the road, police and so on. Mine used 30mb in the last month, so pretty light on the data.

Google Maps.

Free, with voice directions. You can also download map data locally to your phone (when on WiFi) so it saves using data when out.

Don't rely on technology for this, simply use your observational skills.

They're free and will set you off better in the long-run.

Skobbler - https://www.skobbler.com/
Here Maps - https://maps.here.com/ (used to be Nokia Maps, click on menu to get App)

Both allow downloading of country maps to use offline. If you want a social feed from around you (handy for traffic jams) then there's Waze :-

I find phone satnavs useless as my mobile data connection is never good enough. Might be something to do with living in Wales Laughing

I paid for copilot a couple summers ago - for use in the car, with a tablet. I don't regret the purchase, it's cool in the car.

On the bike I use Google navigation, and headphones. It's the shizzle. You get to pay attention to the road and squawky bird bleats in your ear every roundabout then shuts the hell up 'for 12 miles' etc.

Navfree now known as navmii, sometimes get a conflict with on screen route and spoken route but pretty good for free, paid £2 for the speed camera data, spot on.

Don't need data with offline maps.

Sygic is probably the best Android one. It's paid for though.

Google maps is not a sat nav. Neither is Here.

Navfree used to be good until they started doing full ads over your route. Of course there is a paid version though.

Yes it is, I'm looking at it on my phone now, with a route ready to start.

Why not?

It provides a navigation solution through the use of Global Positioning Satellites, with turn-by-turn voice instruction.

Ergo, a Sat-Nav.

With the google maps you can download large areas to use offline.
View the area on wifi or good connection where available.
Say "OK Maps" Confused - and it will offer to download and not just the resolution you are viewing at - once you have that area you can zoom in later with no signal at all.

*won't work on iphone because.

Yes it does, you can download sections of the maps onto iPhone.

Google Maps is good.

Its free, easy to read and also shows you the traffic conditions.

Plus its easy to search for an address/ shop etc and just navigate straight to it.

I didn't know Google Maps was available on iOS. I've never had a problem with the built in Apple Maps myself. Aside from the teething issues when it was first released when it may have caused a few deaths, it works just fine.

Whatever nav software you use, always back it up with a paper map until you gain a bit of geographic experience. Sat navs do not always give you the best route. For example, Northampton to Portsmouth, sat nav says m25, real world says a34 - m3. Always worth checking.

Lane assist is a waste of time. In fact its down right dangerous... as you are looking at a screen to tell you which lane to be in. NOT at the road and what is going on around you.
Speed camera's. If you can't see a get big yellow box, then you should not be on the road.
Speed limits. IT'S 30 unless signed otherwise Thumbs Up

I have CoPilot on my phone for the bike (bluetooth) and a garmin in the car.
Both have over speed and camera warnings turned off. As that bloody noise goes on for ages, even with the tightest settings on some roads.
