Hi this is probably a question for those that are into pc's and know about their wizardry.

Basically I was looking at roofing products online when my pc just suddenly shuts down like the plug has been pulled. Its done sudden shut downs before, but has just needed rebooting and it's OK.

This time it won't turn back on, but when the power switch is pressed, the power indicator light flashes, but the screen doesn't load up, and it's like it's being rapidly switched on and off, before it can load or do anything.

Is my psu fucked maybe? And what should I check? The plug socket works as does the anti surge protected extension lead.

I hope it's not a case of a new pc, as this is a small form factor unit, and they are hard to find and pricey for the spec from what I remember.

Cheers.

Start with pulling out everything that isnt needed.

all drives, leave 1 stick of ram, reset the bios, pull all cards and use onboard graphics if possible.

I've had issues like this a number of times. It's pretty much always been the PSU.

Does the PSU fan turn? How small a form factor is the PC?

I`d start with a new power pack , their cheap enough, but make sure you have the right connection coming from it to supply your cards, drives etc

My pc did this at work whilst gaming. I've left it a few days and it's fired back up. I wouldn't recommend that though as something is clearly wrong Laughing

As CaNsA says, 1 piece of everything.

To test if the PSU is at fault, disconnect every lead from the PSU going to components. Fine the largest connected and you can trick the PSU into booting up by connecting the green wire to any of the black wires using a paperclip.

Hi folks, thanks for all the replies and suggestions. Im not around until tomorrow, so will check it out then, starting with the simple unplugging things advice from Cansa.

Some of the advanced stuff like opening up the case and testing the Psu, is probably beyond me though tbh!

I'll check the fans are still working when I try to power it up too. The unit is about the size of a big tissue box or small shoe box I guess. I'd like to save it though as it's pentium5, and I specced it with 8gb of ram and a 1Tb hard drive, as well as blue tooth etc.

The only other thing to mention is that I've been ignoring the free pop ups for installing windows 10, and am still using windows7 as far as I know.

He will instol teh viruz.

Does sound like the PSU, which is what I would be checking first. I have a spare machine though, so I would be swapping the PSU's out and checking components to see what's fucked up.

If you can't do that though, are you competent in changing the PSU over if you order a new one? You can always send it back (as with anything you order on line).

If you aren't competent changing the PSU, you will need to take it somewhere for them to do it for you, or send it to CaNsA for a malware install Very Happy (jokes).

is it a dell by any chance? power button flashing (orange) is a warning that the psu or motherboard are faulty on a dell.

It is always worth pulling the power lead out and reseting the cmos/bios either by shorting the jumper pins or removing the battery for a few seconds.
