I'm being considering the next bike, I'd love to spank 6k on a newish VFR but can't justify the credit.. So any thoughts on the pre 2005 Vtec? How bad is the hiccup? I'm can see the sudden binary nature being a bit annoying, but really is it such a pain in the butt?? There's some nice examples for a couple of grand..

I have a 2005 VTEC (stock all round), and the vtec "lurch" isn't problematic at all on my bike.
The bike isn't entertaining ridden below 7k - all the go is higher up. I don't find the low-end fuelling particularly bad either, but I don't get out of 2nd gear until I'm doing over 40 and barely get out of first in a 30 zone, so take it for what it's worth - I don't ride bikes at low RPMs. ____________________ Bikes: S1000R, SH350; Exes: Vity 125, PS125, YBR125, ER6f, VFR800, Brutale 920, CB600F, SH300x4

I have a 2002 VTEC and the 'lurch' is nothing to be concerned about, in fact it's quite pleasant when you're pressing on. It's done 70K now and never had a valve check either. They're good quality bikes and pleasant to ride.
They're a bit heavy and a teeny bit bland, but they're all like that... |

Just got to say the fi (5th gen) is a really good reliable bike heavy yes ultra reliable ( fit a transistor reg/ rec they run cold ) and the gear whine is music but goes quiet above 4800rpm and you can make them rock on the twisties |

The beauty of the pre-VTEC VFR was the usable mid-range power from 5-8k rpm, which the engine on the early VTEC ruined. It was OK when revving hard, but rolling on and off the throttle on twisty roads resulted in the dreaded lurch as it switched in and out of 4-valve mode.
I hated the engine on my then new 2003 VTEC and only kept it six months before eventually buying my 2000 VFR back and keeping it a few years until buying a K1200S in 2006.
The 2000-2001 VFR800FiY/1 is definitely the one to go for with its wonderful V4 gear-driven cam engine |
