 |
|
Never bought any luggage for any bike as I've never needed to. I have used a standard backpack a few years ago (the one strap nike ones!) Of which the zip opened on a dual carriage way and lost my passport, birth certificate and driving licence many years ago
Anyway, going up to the lake district for 3 nights in June on the gsxr. Staying at a hotel each night so the luggage is mostly for getting my stuff to the hotel and back. There is always the possibility of further trips which the luggage would need to be with me each day though so I might as well try to get it right.
I've seen both of these in Norwich;
Oxford t30 tail pack for £99
Or
Kriega us30 tail pack for £99 pounds .
I originally liked the Oxford as zip on/off, different compartments and it looks tidy.
The sales guy recommended the Kriega more so which although is more of a carrier bag design that you just bundle up and strap on gives the impression of more space due to lack of smaller yet bulky compartments. I've also heard good things about the brand.
I don't want to have to put my pillion pegs back on and would have liked to keep my seat cowl on but this is looking unlikely.
Im willing to spend around £100, I'm not sure how much use as yet it'll get. I do not commute etc.
I've got £30 worth of vouchers to use at that place which is worth noting.
So questions are;
Would 30 litres be enough for some trainers and a small amount of clothes? I havnt decided if I'll take the dslr yet.
What other options are there?
What would you go for? ____________________ || Past: 1991 Kawasaki ZXR 250 ~ 2003 Honda CBR 600 F Sport ~ 2004 Kawasaki ZX6R B1H 636 ~ 1999 Yamaha R1 ~ 1999 Kawasaki ZX6R J ~ 2004 Kawasaki ZX6R B1H 636 ~ 1998 Honda VTR1000F Firestorm ~ K1 GSXR 600 Track bike ~ K6 GSXR 1000 ~ 2006 Speed Triple 1050 || Current: 2005 R1 https://www.adrucore.co.uk |

I used a std sort of size Oxford tailpack and an expandable tank bag for a 10night tour in France. I took a small rucksack too, not to carry heavy stuff, but it's so useful if you want to take say just water proofs, trainers and food or drink, or have a day out while leaving your stuff at a hotel etc.
You can get alot of stuff in a tailpack, and some have eyelets to allow you to strap stuff on top like waterproofs, jacket or shoes etc. I doubt many tailpacks will fit well or securely on top of a seat cowl though, and if no pillion pegs, you will need some ties down hook points on the subframe, as tieing it round your indicators is a no no in my opinion.
Tank bags are great for secure items,and thinks like wallet, phone, money, maps, drinks etc. But expanded they restrict your room at riding position, and make over 80-90mph not much fun on a sportsbike. Added to that if your doing 100's of miles a day it has to come off several times for fuel.
I've not used my luggage for years now, maybe I should sell and make some space. |

Can't rate the Kriega highly enough, after Aff recommended the US30 I thought I'd give it a go, in fact, Kriega was the luggage of choice on the recent Spain jolly, I think 5 of us had them.
It was brilliant, easy to get on and off the bike, secure while riding and waterproof.
Fit loads of stuff in there, 12 days worth of clothes (4 t shirts, 12 socks/underwear) some Kevlar jeans, hoody, shoes, towel, 2 books and a washbag. Also squeezed my textiles in there when using the kevlars on one of the nicer days.
Before using the kriega I had an oxford tailpack, then another no name brand and then an autokicker one, all did the job but required bungees and straps to make secure as at high speeds they had a tendency to catch the wind and wobble, also mine weren't waterproof.
If the two tail packs are the same price, I'd go Kriega, only thing that was putting me off buying it was the price, worth every penny in my opinion. ____________________ Current: ZX10r (2006)

I splashed out on Kriega. I have the R25 backpack and the US20 tail pack. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase another item from them. Their customer advice was very helpful when I was purchasing, they arrived promptly, and their quality is very good. Especially the zips, which has always been the thing that breaks first on my backpacks.
A cool feature is that actually you can even attach the US20 to the R25 securely when off of the bike if you don't want to leave the tail pack unattended, or just to expand your rucksack capacity.
You can also stack the Kriega tail packs to boost your storage.

They're well made. After a year my Rucksack is still like new and my tail pack is a little battered after all I put it through, but no issues at all with it..
The mounting for the tail packs is ideal for sports bikes. I previously had an Oxford tail pack, which was huge, but it attached with bungee cords and I just couldn't get it to go on the R1 securely.
The Kriega tail packs have straps that go under the pillion seat and poke some small holes out of the side (that are barely noticeable when nothing it attached). You clip your luggage on to these straps and it's nice and secure. Some bikes, such as the R1 I've got, actually have luggage straps already as a part of the pillion seat, so you may not even have to manually add them to your bike.
How it attaches is clearly seen in this picture:

In the US20 you would get in your trainers and a few clothes, but it'd be a tight fit I would think. If you're planning on packing clothes, I'd definitely consider the US30, you'll fit them nicely in there.
I use the US20 almost exclusively for my 19mm Almax (1.5m), and there is plenty of room left in there for me to put soft items in (though I'd get them dirty because my chain gets filthy quickly! ____________________ 2004 R1 & 2018 XSR900

The gsxr also has the rear indicators integrated in the tail unit. I havnt really looked for anchor points under the seat but there's got to be something (big assumption, I really should take a look). |
I had no trouble using Kriega with my k6, pop the seat cowl off and you can attached the straps directly to the subframe. I attached the front two directly to the metal frame but the rear two couldn't fit so I followed the instructions and you can attach two straps together and lay them underneath your seat when you pop it on. It held up without issue on the Autobahns without wobbling or catching on anything.
Just make sure you use the plastic clips on the bags to tie up any lose strapping and that you hear the seat click when you put it on. Oh, and the seat holds the packs high enough so that they won't rub on your fairings.
Good call buying the Kriega stuff! ____________________ Theory test - 19/8/09, CBT - 11/10/09, MOD 1 - 16/8/10, MOD 2 - 27/10/10
