I have Win7 x64 installed and it is becoming increasingly unreliable. I'd have no problem upgrading to Win10 but my Win 7 is the enterprise edition so no free upgrade.

What is the cheapest route to upgrade? I do need x64 but I'd be happy with the home edition or whatever. there is nothing on the drive that I need so a clean install would be good.

In what sense unreliable? Win7 always seemed pretty stable to me.

This looks the the best option so far. Any problem with it being a Dell key?

Yes

Pretty sure they stopped the upgrade last year, it was only available for free for a few months. You have to pay to upgrade now. It is only £20 for a new key so just buy it, considering the amount of time you spend on your PC an official key isn't a bad investment as all the updates will work properly, otherwise get a cracked version.

Maybe it is time for a PC upgrade or to switch to Linux depending on speed.

Really? Are you sure? Unless I've really misinterpreted it appears that MS disagree with you. For £7 I'd give it a go.

I'd still be interested in a link to a £20 windows 10 licence though.

I have no idea how you came to a conclusion that I need to upgrade my PC?

It generally works fine but there are issues with permissions that are becoming irritating. It just needs a fresh install.

Upgrading to Win10 won't solve that, not via the upgrade path, would have to be a clean install, rather than an upgrade.

Anyhow, why bother with Windows 10 at all, doesn't get much better reviews than Windows 8, and that really wouldn't be difficult to do.

Just install Linux, or, if you're feeling a little adventurous, why not Remix OS, although, that might be just a little too cutting edge just yet !!

But yeah, anything but windows !!

And no, WINE and Steam aren't solutions, especially not for someone who doesn't want to turn off UAC.

Meh !! Neutral More games being ported to Linux, including EA, there are also many ways to get alot, not all, but alot of games to play on linux. There are different gaming engines, and there are some that are straight clones of existing games. As a start look here

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_gaming

On top of that there are so many free games for linux. And for Remix, if it'll run on Android, it should run on remix. I use Linux for work, and for home. I use it as a firewall, media server, dvr. I use it for web developing, server builds, office software image & video editing. In over 14 years, I've not felt the need or requirement to use Windows, nor for that matter have my parents, partner or even my daughter in relation to her school work.

I do accept, that Linux & the open source stack effectively provides me with my income, although Oracle, is and can be a good source of income as well, which in turn pays for my bikes etc. And I accept, I'm probably a little more familiar with Linux than some, but really, from a user perspective now, it's just soooo easy.

And "Rogerborg" is my Netrek handle from the 1990s, but ain't nobody got time fo' that now.

I only have one Windows box left at home, but I won't be ditching it until everything in my Steam back catalogue runs reliably and smoothly on linux, no exceptions, no dissembling, no fiddling with configuration files, no swapping drivers in order to play Murder Simulator VI then swapping them back for Rage Racer 2016.

But that's unlikely to ever come to pass because SteamOS / Steam Machines have flopped big style.

You can buy the same hardware for the same price with either SteamOS or Windows on it. But the same games - including Valve's flagship SteamOS titles - run significantly slower on Linux than on Windows. Smaller catalogue, same (high) price, worse performance - "dead on arrival" is a common phrase in relation to Steam Machines. Or was - it's all gone ominously silent. I expect to see them quietly dropped, and linux support dwindle rather than strengthen.

I may be projecting here, but if OP has any interest in gaming then he'd be well advised to stick to Windows for the foreseeable future.

Of course, if he enjoys being told to "RTFM", "RTFS", or "Have you tried tar gzipping your sudo squid over ssh?" on "help" boards, then lunix will suit just fine. Wink

Unreliable is very broad and I don't even understand so I thought maybe hardware issue.

Ok, am wrong about the upgrades, If it was just a key then it shouldn't work with any windows 7 and should only work with the ISO that came on/with the PC, if you had the same ISO it would work but you may have some extra programs.

£20 windows 10 product key

Good ol' BCF. Laughing I shouldn't expect any more than what was offered.

Anyway, sorted using a COA off a busted works PC.

UAC is disabled. It's a problem for which many have struggled for a solution when I searched the 'net. Not impossible to work with but annoying.
I have a linux box in my garage, it can stay there. I also use it on my Raspberry.
Fin, you do talk some balls Laughing Do a search next time. Microsoft will happily tell you that you only need a product key, nothing else.

Really?

Except we can imagine the fun malware will have with this. Fake a system crash by popping up a blue screen, show a QR code that links to a malicious website, and fool someone into opening it on their browser. From there you can offer crap PC repair software (your machine just "crashed", after all), pretend to be Microsoft offering updates to fix your PC, and so on.

So, badmen who have already pwned you can do things that might be to your detriment?

Given how often a modern Windows user will ever see a BSOD (never unless they have hardware failure), why would you even go to the bother of faking one in order to scam them? Just show any popup you like, or, here's a thought, simply make their browser-o-choice open your scam site directly.

I've got Windows 10 on Several devices, including 2 modified laptops and a full on custom build PC. I've had a couple of BSODs on my custom build that was down to wrong drivers or dodgy overclocking.

I think it's great I've had no trouble with it it's faster and more stable than 7.

I reinstalled it at the weekend as I replaced my Mobo/CPU/RAM/SSD (6700k and 950 pro yo)

Was simple it took literally minutes, and I used my Windows 7 key to activate (Win 7 upgrade from Vista Key)

Upgraded would be the better term I suppose, I was making the point they aren't stock therefore more likely to go wrong.

Both have had new Network cards (AC), RAM, and SSD's
One has had a new Processor (i7) and a light up keyboard.

Both also have Stickers Laughing

If you were using a bespoke O/S then yeah, you might struggle... but you are using the most popular operating system in the world with very common hardware.

The only issue you might run into is ram compatibility, but that is very unlikely to be a windows issue.
