I'm looking at the deal Honda is offering on the new VFR800. Inte ear free ob pop with a Fred touring pack. I know it's not the most exiting bike, but that's not what I'm looking for anyway.

Was also looking at Triumph Sprint, but don't like ke the looks as much.

Any comments or opinions of any of the bikes mentioned would be much appreciated.

Sorry, predictive typing on an iPad!

Should have been with a free touring pack'.

This is a hugger, panniers, and 12v plug.

I test rode and liked the Honda, looks good and engine was nice. Not cheap tho and I fear the servicing still really expensive on that V4 too?

Also 240kg wet weight!? No thanks.

In the best BCF tradition of suggesting stuff that isn't on your shortlist.... Z1000sx?

It's a nice bike and would be a good choice, however even with such an offer it is still very expensive for what it is. In 2008 I bought a brand new VFR (which isn't very different to the current bike) on a similar offer and ran it for over 5 years and over 25,000 miles. It was a good bike but the build quality of Honda is not, in my opinion, worth any premium nowadays.
When I moved on from the VFR, I part-exed it for a 2005 BMW which was a much nicer bike in every way, and have since further delved into the world of second hand BMW fanboyism!

I would agree with looking at the Kawasaki's also, they seem to offer good quality and value.

The Triumph Sprint GT I haven't ridden, but it is a direct competitor with the VFR. From what I recall, the older ST is meant to be more fun to ride solo, but the GT is better if you are regularly traveling with a pillion. They probably won't hold their value as well as a VFR, but I imagine you can work out a better deal to buy one new in the first place.

Looked at the Kawasaki, but I keep getting drawn back to the Honda. I know it's heavy, expensive, servicing also. But I like the sleek smooth look it has over the aggressive Kawa. I keep thinking the Sprint is a more sensible buy due to cost, but again, don't think it looks as good (in my eyes) as the VFR.

What BMW did you get? I'm also considering a F800GT, due to the lightness and belt drive.

I got an R1200ST. They didn't make them for long and the modern equivalent is an R1200RS.
I've been fickle in recent years however and recently changed again. I own to BMWs now - a K1200S and an R1200RT!

If you are after a sport tourer and don't mind used or smaller panniers the K1300S is well worth a look (latest version of my K1200S). The weight may seem a lot but it is lower to the ground and lower centre of gravity when compared to a VFR800, so easier to manage.

The F800GT is a lovely bike, I recently considered buying on instead of the R1200RT I ended up buying. They do an "F800 GT SE" which includes the luggage etc. and although it makes less power than a VFR the lower weight makes up for that. Downside compared to the bigger BMWs is the foot positioning is a little cramped and close to the exhaust.

If I was set on buying new and had a choice of VFR800 or F800GT I would go with the BMW, however this is very much a matter of personal preference and I know others who would mock such a choice - go out and test them all!

Well here is the first mocker - How you can compare an agricultural twin with a VFR Shocked

Jesus BMW tinted specs or what

I don't deny it. My bike choices would be cheaper if I had, say, Suzuki tinted specs! While that's what I personally like, I do have plenty of miles on Japanese bikes previously before making that decision.

I quite like the smooth V4 of the VFR (apart from the shoddy fuel injection from a closed throttle that is) but I do indeed prefer an agricultural twin. Each to their own!

Why does it have to be new?

Near enough £11k for the VFR against say a 2014 low miles Sprint with full luggage for about £6.5k (dealer price). I know what I would be looking at. The Sprint is a lot of bike for your money, even new.

Any deal that means the bike comes with hard luggage has to be good. Thats a grand if you have to buy it new later.

Done, put the deposit down, should get it in a week or 2.

Got a quick shifter and akrapovic exhaust too.

Need to treat my Suzuki with kid gloves now, that my deposit.

Actually, just looking on the Triumph website, brand new, the Sprint is £8999 with full matching hard luggage. My local dealers are supplying them with a bike satnav fitted and running.

VFR is £10600 without luggage but you say they are giving away the touring pack so that is full hard luggage.

F800 GT SE is £10200 without a topbox so factor that in.

I know where my money would be going - Hinkley

For the VFR?

Looked at the Sprint, but they are charging 9.9% apr, which adds approx. £1600, taking it to a similar price to the Honda on 0%. I reckon the Honda will have better residual value.

Yeah, trading in my Suzuki GSX650F, getting the same for that as I paid for it a year ago, so not lost anything on that.

A VFR is much nicer than a Triumph Sprint in every respect (I rode them back-to-back) and is a great solo sports tourer. I wouldn't worry about the weight as it still handles well enough to have fun.

The F800 is a horrible little bike, but the K1300S is brilliant, with a really flexible engine and warpspeed acceleration. The feedback from the Duolever front end can be a little vague though. I had a K1200S for three years, but that was slightly rough compared to the 1300 engine.

The latest 1200 boxer LC engine is really nice - it's free revving and has plenty of torque. I'd go for an R1200RS over a VFR800 if I was spending £11k-ish and wanted to carry a pillion, otherwise a Tracer 900 or Z1000SX would offer better value Thumbs Up

Couldn't agree more, the biggest issue for me after riding the Tracer & R1200 RS was how rev-happy the Honda is. You constantly have to work that gearbox to feel like you're making progress (the same for the Tracer).
