https://www.gov.uk/government/news/councils-get-new-powers-to-tear-down-pointless-road-signs

"the requirement to place repeat speed limit signs has been removed - now councils can make their own decisions on how many speed limit signs are needed so that drivers know what limits apply"

Hmmm I wonder if one, at the edge of town and that's your lot would do it?

The problem here will be for 40mph, 50mph and sometime National.
30mph could be a problem in small villages with little to no street lights.
My guess is they're not making enough from speed cameras now Smile

So will they stop putting pointless/irrelevant information on matrix signs too do we think?

Like ones telling you that underinflated tyres waste petrol or (worse) directing you to a website to check traffic info. while driving on a fucking motorway.

There has never been provision for repeater signs for 30mph zones anyway. (Yes, I've seen them too but they aren't actually an official roadsign).

I feel removing repeater signs from ambiguious 40 and 50mph limits is a licence to scamera money. If they are bringing this in, they should have a rule (not recommendation) that you can only have a scamera within half a mile of a sign indicating a 40 or 50mph speed limit.

I hope the judiciary will take a dim view of speed tax collection on "decluttered" roads. I mean, there's always hope.

'Check your Fuel' and 'Wear your seat belt' on a fecking motorcycle? We motorcylists are The Great Un-considered road users. Sad Smile

It's probably the same sort of citizen writing matrix puns as the Pie-eaters who 'work' Scammera vans and Cooncil CCTV systems. Rolling Eyes

The new sign regs (about 60 quid for a hard copy or a free pdf on the government website) just relax most of the old rules about sign placement and the requirements to light them.

But, they cleverly put in a disclaimer that although you can get away with less signage, it is up to the designer/engineer to add more if he/she thinks it is needed. So if someone comes a cropper and claims inadequate signage the designer gets the blame.

These changes also mean that my constant advice to work mates on why their parking ticket can be appealed successfully will not be so straight forward as of this week.

I've thought for a long time that speed cameras should have the speed limit for the road noted on the back of the camera itself.

This would serve as confirmation that your'e doing the correct speed (as you shouldn't be speeding anyway) and reduce the grampa's who panic brake from 40mph to 20mph as they're not sure if they're over the speed limit or not.

This should be simple.

Enter a town, speed limit drops to 30mph. Exit a town, it goes up to the national speed limit.

They manage it in those countries across the channel, so it can't be that hard.

point of order .. the camera that flashed us in germany was at the end of a short succession of speed reduction signs 100 to 70 to 50 and 30km/h ..

I bet the signs will get taken down so that there likely hood that revenues will go up.

the government and the politicians that run it are corrupt enough for that to happen

Getting away from speed limit signs for a moment.
There's a stretch of dual carriage way near me, it's the only one for miles and miles!
As you approach the end of the dual carriageway, there are at least 20 separate signs, can't be sure, it's difficult to count them all.
Off the top of my head these include, "End of DC", "Road Narrows", "No Right Turn", "Escape Road", "Bend", "Speed limit" and the obligatory "Speed Camera" sign, (for the non existant cameras).
Nearly all of these signs are on either side of the southbound DC lanes, then duplicated nearer the end of the DC
This is a rural DC in the middle of nowhere, there are no street lights, the reflected light back from high beam has to be seen to be believed!

I don't know how anyone could come to the conclusion that this amount of roadside clutter could be anything other than a distraction!

Doncaster, the bain of my existence, appears to be made of 40mph dual carriageways. Except when they are 30mph or NSL. The result? sedate people dawdling in the outside lane at 25 whilst the impatient treat the whole as NSL as most of the speed cameras have been ripped out and been replaced by the occasional van, the location of which is published in the local paper (and correspondingly online in advance). Few of the roundabouts in this mess obey highway code style approach lane arrangements. I definately think we should rip out the few repeater speed limit signs and lane guidance signs we have. It's obviously the signs that are at fault, not road layouts that your average moron cannot deal with.

Halifax road between keighley and denholme is another bain of my existance. The speed limit changes between 30, 40 and NSL repeatedly, and the speed cameras by most of the changes in limit mean this is a revenue generating exercise. I wonder how many accidents occour when someone panic breaks to 25mph for a camera in a 40?
