I'll try and keep this short.. Going to test ride a bike privately on friday. I've not ridden in a few months so not insured. I've ridden the same model, & know I like it, just want to ensure all is in sound mechanical order etc.

I've been told about one-day policies, but not looked into it yet. If I take out a full policy on the bike before going i've got the 14 day cooling off period to cancel in the chance there's something wrong with the bike. Though am I correct in thinking i'll lose my deposit? (planning to pay monthly..)

Will one-day cover be more cost effective? I'ts too late to ring them for a quote right now. Guessing it'll have to be fully comp since I wont be making a theft claim obviously.. Whereas I would be going TPF&T with the full policy. I am confuse. Anyone done this before?

I thought all that meant was you just couldnt exploit it by constantly renewing your one-dayer whenever you fancied taking the bike out?

no one does them as you need to have the bike either sorn and off road or insured and taxed

they just no longer exist as far as I know

They still exist for cars, so you might find one for bikes. Continuous Insurance just means the vehicle has to have insurance for *someone* to drive it. If *someone else* wanted to drive, they could still legally use a daily policy.

Like, ooh, I dunno, test driving someone else's bike? Rolling Eyes

could ask the seller to put you on his insurance for the day thats likely to be the most cost effective option

I would never do that as a seller. Most people have riding 3rd party on other peoples bikes anyway. If you don't, get a grown up to test ride it.

Within the statutory 14 day cooling off period you should be charged only the reasonable cost of setting up the policy, plus a pro-rata amount for the days that you actually use. You should not be charged a cancellation fee, or anything that appears to be a penalty for cancellation.

Of course, "reasonable cost" is nothing of the sort, with folk getting rinsed up to £50 for it. Some people also get charged cancellation fees in blatant disregard of the legislation (who's going to stop them?), and bear in mind that a "pay monthly" policy is paying off a loan that covers the cost of a full year's policy, so there could be a whole different set of fees attached to that.

tl;dr version is that it may be your best option, but it might not be as cheap as you'd like if you decide you don't want the bike. I'd get it pre-set up first then only actually go ahead with it on the spot once you've given the bike a good going over. The instant that your certificate of insurance is "available" to you (online or by email is fine) then you're covered.

Could you not find the cheapest quote, insure it monthly by paying the deposit (cheapest possible one) then when your done just cancel the policy and get your refund under the right to cancel?

I tried to get one day cover on an old 600 diversion a couple of weekends ago, through Bikesure/Adrian Flux.
They wanted £90 for the pleasure but happily informed me that it'd cost the exact same for 7 days if I wanted it. Laughing

They were told to politely fuck off Middle Finger

That was pretty much what I was asking, if I knew id get the initial deposit back after cancelling then it'd be a no-brainer. Moot point now though as the bikes been sold but cheers for the replies Thumbs Up
