Realistically with a set of new seals on a set of forks, if the plating is slightly pitted in several places, how long would you expect the seals to last?

Are you going to do the araldite bodge?

(fill pits with slow curing araldite (not the rapid) then polish it smooth)

I've never heard of that method to be honest.
The forks have been rebuilt and are on the bike, I've polished them as best I can and it does feel very smooth but the pitted marks are clearly there.

Hi

Depends where the pits are. They will damage the seals fairly quickly if the pit is going through the seal, but on most bikes that is at least 10mm beyond the point the pit is visible.

How quickly will depend on how rough the pit is and how often it goes over the seal

All the best

Katy

We rub the edges of pitting on 'big' rods using a Hard Translucent Arkansas Stone. (Which is a very fine grained, hard natural stone from Arkansas https://www.naturalwhetstone.com/)

It's pointless waste of effort normally.
It's more a case of looking as if you are doing 'something' to help. (smoke and Mirrors)

The idea is to smooth the microscopic rags off the edges of pits and help prevent tearing the new seals.
Ultimately oil will get out whether by ripped seals or carried out in the pits.

The only solution is grind chrome grind the rods or normally more practical is to fit new rods. (And new seals again).

There's plenty of places that will rechrome the forks which should work out cheaper than replacing them.

I thought as much, the pitting isn’t so bad in the immediate area but seems smooth enough that it would last sometime.
I will ask my mechanic about chroming.

Cheers

Aren't you going to ask about the Kickstart/Keith/Katy thing? Someone needs to so it might as well be you.

Funny you say that because as I was looking over the quoted text and saw that.
First thoughts were, sex change…but then after the flame war BCF had after that dude/chick/biker turned up. I thought I’d move along.

Lol…come on then. Who is Katy?

I've seen a couple of others asks when he/she first changed their name, only to get the "...move along, nothing to see here response" (not from the person in question mind)
MEH, barely matters IRL nevermind online, it's the advice that matters.

Rather surprisingly, BCF is the safest space on the internet.

Pardon the pun but it takes some balls to do what Katy did, especially after seeing quite how much flack MissTamsin got. Laughing
