Hey guys,

Got an odd question (I guess) my GF wants to buy a motorcycle and we found a nice one which most likely she will end up buying.

Since my insurance covers me to ride other bikes as well would I be able to ride it back after the she buys it?

Thanks Smile

Providing she'd already also taken out a policy on it, I think? My understanding is that someone has to be insured on it full-time for it to be taxed / on the road.

You might need her to be there though to sign the V5C etc.

If that's what your insurance says, than I expected you would.

Might be worth giving them a call to double check there's no small print loopholes.

I'd forgotten about that part myself. Embarassed

Yes, before I could tax my new bike, it did indeed need to be insured.

EDIT: If your gf doesn't hold a licence, expect it to be a nightmare finding a company who'll insure her. The only one I could find was Bikesure.

I would assume that on the day of the purchase the previous owner road tax still work?

I'm not sure tbh but, I believe once it changes hands, the tax officially ends.

Someone else will no doubt be along to give a definitive answer to that question though.

None of my policies have ever mentioned the requirement for the vehicle to be insured before I could ride or drive on my own policy.

You might not be able to leave it anywhere on the road unattended though as then it becomes an uninsured vehicle on the road. I think?

It would go into a private drive off the road so the road tax shouldn't be a problem.

I might need to give a call to my insurance company and ask them. She can afford the bike but getting it insured the same day to drive it back would leave her with no money.

I wouldn't bother calling your insurer, they're likely to give you a random or incorrect answer, as in Pryor vs GMP.

Look at your certificate. Read your schedule to confirm. If it doesn't say that the bike needs to be covered under another policy, then it doesn't need to be.

Change of keeper will cancel the VED (for that keeper). My belief is (not verified) that your GF (pics needed) can immediately buy VED for it using the new keeper slip number without the bike needing to be insured. However, if she does so, it will show as being insured anyway, under the old owner's cover, so no problem.

tl;dr version - take a copy of your certificate of insurance, buy VED online / over the phone, ride home.

I was informed recently by the dealership that they couldn't tax the bike without a copy of my insurance. This could be BS though but, that's what I was told.

This also used to be the case when I lived in the IoM, as you had to produce your insurance documents when getting your tax from the post office. However that's not really relevant in this case.

EDIT: The dealership bike was new though, so not sure if that makes a difference.

Do I need my insurance certificate to tax my car?

Not in most cases. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) stopped checking insurance when they tax a vehicle in December 2013.

First no more discs in the windscreen and now for the first time in 40 years you won't have to hunt down an insurance certificate to buy your car tax either

It doesn't say you don't need insurance though. It just states you won't need to provide a paper copy as it can be checked on the data base.

It's all a bit unclear really. Confused

Nope, my Google-fu is failing me, but I seem to recall DVLA saying that they'll be happy to take our money even if it's not on the MID because they'll catch us out under the continuous insurance requirements later anyway and get their blackmail demand in either way.

Look at it this way, if you've just bought a vehicle, you need both insurance and VED before you can legally drive it away. There's no grace period. But insurance can take days to show up on the MID, so what do?

And it's really not a problem in this case as it'll almost certainly be showing as insured at the point OP's GF (need pics) buys VED.

All that said, she might as well pay for the insurance as well as soon as it's bought, even if it's OP that rides it home. It's easy enough to do all this stuff online now at the point of purchase.

I'm picking up a new bike tomorrow and have had to provide my insurance documents to the dealer - they said they needed them in order to register the bike

Realising that we're going well OT (hello BCF) that's interesting as it's no longer necessary to show insurance when personally registering a new vehicle, except in Northern Ireland.

https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration/new-registrations

It used to be, I had to do it in 2009, but the requirement was done away with some time ago, under the same reasoning that continuous insurance gonna getchya anyway.

There may still be a need, or it may just be dealers just covering their own backs because it's what they've always done and they're creatures of ritual.

I recall buying a car long about 2005 where the paper certificate was tardy arriving, and the dealer wasn't for letting me drive it away untaxed. I handed them a letter saying that they'd made me aware of the legal situation and that I accepted that was my responsibility, and asked them whether they wanted to take my money in exchange for the car or not. It turns out that they did. They even gave me some flowers for my lady wife.

She's German so not into things like that, I guess Very Happy

The bike also seems good, new tyres, 12 month MOT and £600 but has some rust which I can fix.

You know the usual stuff to check for? Saggy shocker (although there's some bush play even from new), and rusted exhaust, especially the link pipe and the bottom of the end cans if it's still on a stock system. Clutch basket will be rattly but should quieten down with the clutch in.
