Ola,

Bit of an arse-elbow question, but i don't know whether to trust the google results. I'm not too handy, i've never used primer before so feel free to paste links.

Rust Type 1 - On both of my bikes the paint on the swingarm and down by the adjusters is flaking off with a layer of rust underneath. How do you treat this?

Rust Type 2 - On the Kwak just below the upper fairing the frame looks like it has been 'worn' off - it's smooth and there's no rust. The paint hasn't flaked off it's almost a gradual fade of steel back into the black gloss paintwork.

I've got to sell one of them in the next couple of months, so want it to be a good job, but not bothered enough to get the whole frame powder coated. I've heard hammerite suggested, but won't that look crap?

Cheers for any suggestions

For the swingarm, I'd take it down to bare metal (wire brush, emery cloth), then spray it up with smoothrite in black or silver. Leave it for a few days to properly dry and solidify before reassembling. Sprayed properly it will be a reasonable finish, though obviously not factory. Preparation is everything, go through progressively finer grades of paper to ensure it is smoooooth.

For the frame, it sounds as if something is rubbing (boot? knee? hose?). Anyway, I'd just get a bottle of touch-up paint from eBay to match your paint code. If it's a metallic paint that may end up being three bottles (a sparkly base, a translucent colour, then a top coat). Build up in thin coats.
