hi all

first time using a pinlock system, bought agv k5 and guy fitted it in shop, it works well except after maybe 3-5minutes I get a slight steam trail just between my eyes at the top of the pinlock insert which is annoying and i have to open up for a bit to get it away.

i have removed the visor and it looks to be fitted correctly so a bit unsure on this one, any ideas?

1) Remove visor.

2) Pull pinlock in middle towards you and it will loosen and remove (you might need to flatten the visor a little).

3) Clean inside of visor and wait to dry.

4) Flatten visor and fit pinlock (is fiddly, you'll get it no problem after you've done it once or twice).

Make sure the pinlock has a good seal and isn't slipping, the screws that the pinlock is held in place by are adjustment screws (not that I recall what way does what).

Outside of the possibility of any actual issues make sure you have your vents open at all times regardless of weather and if you're in stop start traffic at 30mph or below then it's to be expected.

I find they tend to dry out over time (the insert) removal and an overnight soak in water helps to keep the silicone bead seal working if the limited adjustment of the pins wont. Clean the rest of the visor in soapy water while you have it off the helmet too.

Is it the Pinlock insert fogging up or the visor behind the insert?

If the visor then the seal between the insert and visor is likely broken so do as advised in above posts.

If the insert itself is fogging up it's probably because you have moisture inside the helmet, either trapped in the vents or on your head (rain on your hair for example). When the inside of the helmet warms up from you being in it the trapped moisture will settle on the coldest part, ie the visor/pinlock.
After wet rides I leave my helmet in a warm room or near a heat source with all the vents and visor open. That ensures any moisture that has made it's way in is dried out.

I had similar issues in cold / wet weather, and the only thing I've found that works is using a Foggy Respro mask inside the helmet.

Throughout the last winter the combination of pinlock + foggy + rainex has kept my visor clear in all conditions.

Carefully rub a little silicone oil into the rubber seal on your helmet that your visor presses against. I got given some shark brand stuff with my helmet, I think it more often ships with premium flip-fronts. Make sure you're not getting a steady stream of water coming in the helmet from the edge of the eye port. Get the helmet and lining dry. If you have a pinlock you need to keep the visor shut. A foggy mask as mentioned or similar can help too, particularly for glasses wearers.

Is there a protective film on the pinlock you've not removed ?

If it is misting then it is probably not tight against the visor.

Remove the visor, place it on something flat with a non-scratching surface Towel/Micro fiber cloth etc. and spread it flat-wards. This releases the tension on the pins.
When the visor is flat the insert 'should' self align. Release the pressure on the visor and the insert should be in the correct position to make a 360ยบ seal.

The insert should not be moveable as the seal will be under some pressure now.
If it can be moved then you need to tune the pins. They hold the insert on a cam device.
You need to press them out though as they set really tight in the holes and will be possibly impossible to twist. (Spot double-neg use)
You may need to push them out using a coin they feel like they are glued in but they will pop out.
Look for the cam and push them back into the visor.
Re-fit the insert and then you should be able to twist the pins to a tighter position (With the visor flatted again).
When adjusted you will need to lock the pins by pressing them right home into the visor.

Another issue is that the absorbent film is loaded with moisture and can no longer mop-up the little bit of moisture that's fogging the view.
You need to remove the insert and let it dry.

The last thing would be a tear in the silicone bead. Nothing to do there except replace the insert.
You can maybe bodge it with some silicone sealant but it will not be easy to get the correct properties in the seal.

Careful now.

Cleaning visor and Pinlock regularly, yes.

Soaking Pinlock in water? No, just no!

The inserts work in two ways. When fitted correctly they create an insulating layer of air that works like double glazing to keep the inside of the insert warmer than the outside of the visor.

The second feature is the moisture absorbent plastic the insert is made from. That soaks up any fog that forms on the inside and keeps it dry. If you soak it overnight you'll lose that feature. Even storing the helmet in a cold damp garage can reduce the effectiveness. I keep my helmet in the house and leave the insert off the visor to dry after I clean it.

The only time my visor ever fogs up is when it snows. Must be something temperature related because it's always clear in heavy rain.
