Every single time we have been away, we have been pressured into taking additional insurance on holiday hire cars.

Without it they usually say you will be liable fro a £1500 excess, if anything happens - like a scratch etc Shocked

So obviously you pay the extra.

Is everyone else the same?

what do you all do?

Hired a car to get from Manchester to East Midlands last year after missing a flight. They told me it had magically gained a scratch en route and charged me an extra £450 for the pleasure of it. Refused every objection and when I made several complaints all I got back was the admin fee.
So if you're planning on hiring from Avis, I'd take out the extra.

All you need to do is take out the hire car excess cover from somebody like protect your bubble dot com - basically the same thing but a damn site cheaper.

Thumbs Up

Try

insurance4carhire.com

We bought cover from them for our Cyprus car hire. You can insure by day, week, month etc. up to 5 drivers as long as they are named on the hire agreement.

All the reviews were good, they pay and don't quibble if you need to claim.

The only thing to note is that the hire company will "block" a sizable sum on your credit card when you tell them you have an independent policy, because you're not buying from them.

Not a problem unless you plan to max out your card while your on holiday.

Thumbs Up

When I was working for Shell and had a hire car account with Avis I automatically had the extra insurance. I got taken out by a tipper truck one time and even though it wasn't my fault I was told that if I hadn't had the extra insurance, I would have been liable for the full price of the car until the insurance companies sorted it out.

I certainly wouldn't hire a car without damage waiver insurance ever.
