When replacing tyres with inner tubes I've seen various combinations of where the two nuts and washer can go.

Sometimes they've been like in the picture (but with the nuts screwed down to the washer), sometimes the washer is on the inside of the rim, two nuts outside, sometimes washer plus one nut inside, one nut outside, sometimes no washer, sometimes no nuts. What's the proper way? :/

Whilst the snapped spark plug thread has gone quiet I thought I'd give you something interesting to sink your teeth into.

There's usually only one, and it's probably supposed to be against the rim to prevent the valve part dropping inside if it starts to go flat - which would wreck the tube and tyre too most likely.

Brings back memories, I had both nuts locked against the rim.

I put the washer inside, between tube and rim, so the tube doesn't bulge towards the hole.

I leave the nut loose on the outside, so a creeping tube will betray itself by the valve lying at an angle.

But I've been wrong before.

A friend of mine who was president of the VMCC died a few years back. He hold me the only place to put the nuts was in the bin, his reason... He had seen an under-inflated tyre spin on a rim under hard acceleration and rip the stem from the tube, if the nuts were not in place it would have just been pulled through the rim.

I've had something similar cause a blowout on the autobahn. Wasn't underinflated but had unseated itself slightly in a slide on diesel going round a cloverleaf. The instant the tyre rotated on the rim, it tore the valve out and deflated. It stood a chance of just moving a bit and being noticed if it hadn't been clamped down hard.

If tightened down, the nuts can also stop the tyre seating properly on the rim (the tube doesn't necessarily sit hard against the inside of the wheel, more un inside it).

I use them to stop the valve pulling back out while I put the tyre on and to get the first few psi into it with a push-fit pump without pushing the valve back into the rim. Then (for want of anything better to do with it) I screw it up against the dust cap.
