I'm kind of new to riding in this country, and even newer to parking since I ride mostly farm roads for fun and commute on foot. I was cited for "parking in a walking path." To me the presence of bicycles would indicate it's not a walking path. Would you contest this, or am I just an ignorant foreigner? Thanks for the advice.

Legally they are right, the average person would probably agree it is bollocks however I don't think you have a leg to stand on.

Appeal, tell the absolute truth that you are a dim American and very new to this. You may get let off for first offence. Wink

In your photo there are double yellow lines on the road so your options for trying to contest it are somewhat limited.

Were you parked or had your vehicle broken down and so you put it on the pavement rather than leaving it obstructing the carriageway whilst you were waiting for your mate to turn up with the necessary tools for fixing it? Wink

pondering trolling traffic wardens with it

The bicycle hoops obstruct pedestrians anyway, so you could argue it. The argument needs to center on the fact that you could not have been causing an obstruction. If they don't accept that then you'll probably have to pay it.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

also. it looks like the bike bays have a different coloured tarmac/concrete which you're not on. possibly you are on what is deamed as pathway, rather than the allocate bike space

edit: apparently im blind

Can't be of any help. Although I don't really blame you for parking as you did, steering locks can be snapped easily and I cry a little inside when I see a bike with a disc lock / steering lock only on in carparks or alike. My point being I'd much rather always park next to and chain part of my frame to an unmoveable object just to make it that little bit harder to get at should someone take a liking to it.

if your bike is on foreign plates then not sure how they can trace you and if it was me id ignore the ticket but if bike is on UK plates you may have to pay THE MAN.

Here's the same bit of road from another angle (thanks Google Maps). Clearly not causing an obstruction by parking there, but clearly not a motorcycle parking bay. You have 2 problems:

1. Double-yellow lines include the pavement.
2. Council won't want to set a precedent. 1 bike today. 10 bikes next week.

They cover to the edge of the highway, which usually includes the footpath/footway/pavement.

But if that's a highway, why have the council wilfully obstructed free passage with bollards and cycle hoops? Thinking

That may be the reason for the rather curious "parking in a walking path", which I'm not familiar with. By-law?

That said, I'd try the fresh-off-the-boat plea first.

I heard it was broken down, my mate was driving past at the time and saw it.
I hear Kawasaki had a lot of problems with the rubber perishing on the reverse-acting diaphragm block valve on this particular model.

I appreciate it. Sounds like I'm wrong but not crazy, which is always good. I'll probably pay the 35 quid to avoid any hassle, but I'm sure going to miss Germany's 'if there's room it's a parking spot' mentality.

Parking in the cycle bays like that is encouraged in the Doncaster area, council installed loads in a build it and they will come mentality. Most of these are completely unused, a few appear to be overwhelmed by scooterists.

I don't think the council understands that lycra clad recreational cyclists only ever leave bikes in the beer gardens of village pubs, and the only other class of cyclist are the dealers/runners currently without a nova/golf who dont care for the town centre.

I'm also baffled by the amount of bicycle parking around the second hand furniture stores in the civic quarter.

Does that grey curb mean anything? Seems to only be painted covering the area of the bicycle bays.

I think the traffic warden is a twit. If it was me I'd have parked in a similar spot and I would argue the ticket. Of the 4 parking tickets I have had, I have only paid two having argued the 2 that I didn't pay. I think calling up and going the "I'm new to this and I'm really sorry for my mistake" sort of route, might pay off.

I wondered that and decided in my head that maybe it used to be a dropped kerb which has now changed to a proper kerb.

Looks more like new curbing than painted.

I'll take a photo over the weekend, but near where the now non-existent trees poke through the upper deck.
