Hi,
I have a beat up BTS GY 125 (kick start only) Chinese motorcycle, and can't get it so start, I'd appreciate any ideas on doing just this. Here's what I know:
- The ignition wiring is fine and it sparks
- Petrol is getting from the tank into the carb
- There is suction at the carb (put my hand against air intake whilst kicking)
- Choke/Throttle fine
- Has new air filter and exhaust fitted (yes I know it's on the wrong side ).
- When putting a little petrol down plug bore it does indeed start up, but only turns over a couple times before dying, even with throttle, as if there is no petrol getting to it.
Could it be that it's something as simple as the air-fuel mixture screw being off? I could get a new 26mm carb for £15 if all else fails?
Here's a quite recent photo:

If anyone has any suggestions on what I can check or do to try get it started, please do share. Thanks in advance,
Philip.

I think that in cleaning the carb out I altered the air fuel screw, as just took off carb and screwed it all the way in, then 3/4 turns out. Started 4th or 5th time. Just me being stupid :/
I don't think they'd just left it there to get tools, like I said it had a sign and it was beyond the state where you could just patch it up there on the spot, it did not look like it had just given way mid ride (without even a spark plug cap) rather it looked as if it had been left there intentionally. Since then I've had to shell out well over £100 getting new exhaust, new cables, rewiring and cleaning. Thanks for all advice anyway. |

It was stolen and abandoned, or the owner was coming back to fix it.

Well known trick to take the plug cap off to stop the odd thief from riding off on your bike.
Does sound like it was dumped, but maybe a trick. You fix the bike up, they now come along and claim it back.
What would you do then? Do you have proof of the sign and where you found it? |
No I don't, and in answer to what I would do then: if they had the legitimate V5C document, then of course I would have to give it back: just take of all parts I added first. I don't have proof that I didn't knick it, all I can do is give my word. It's up to other people how they interpret it, but I don't think I did anything wrong or that most other people would have acted differently. If you disagree, that's okay and you're entitled to your opinion. However I do find it frustrating that I come onto the technical advice part of the forum to ask for help, and that most of the replies I get are just in criticism of a choice I made. Unless they're psychic, no one can say that I'm lying, and that I didn't find it as I described or that I don't honestly believe I've done nothing wrong - so why can't people just take my word and leave their scepticism to themselves, and instead focus on helping me, rather than making needless jibes?
In reply to what you said, yes I suppose people do sometimes do that (although it was the cap not the plug that was missing). However a multitude of components were non-functional: snapped clutch, seized throttle, seized rear brake, no ignition wiring - the list goes on... To me this did indicate (as I've already said) that it was left because someone no longer wanted it and therefore wanted to give it away to someone that might find better use for it/have the time or money to fix it up.
It does indeed now run, as I can confirm it was the air fuel mixture screw at the bottom of the carb that was causing problems, with far too much air coming in, which would explain why the plug seemed dry every time I took it out. |

Well done for getting it going, but stealing by finding is still theft, no matter how you regard it yourself. Actually theft is taking with the intention of permanently depriving the owner, so as a matter of fact you're probably more of a thief than whomever took it first time round in the eyes of the law because you've taken it for your own whereas they could claim they were just going to ride it about and then take it back (which is why we have the TWOC offence). Something I learned on jury service right there, a guy who took the wheels off a stolen car got prosecuted for theft but the guy who took the car didn't.
All you've done by making it run is massively increase the chance of getting collared for it. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'
