I'm trying to understand whisky a little better lately.

Has anyone been to a good whisky tasting they could recommend in/near London?

Vagabond Wines in Fulham do a variety of tastings of different drinks, and one of their evenings was on whiskey. Tried a bunch; Scotch, Irish, American, Japanese. Drank with some water to make it easier to discern the different flavours. But of course they don't specialize in whiskey, and who knows when they'll have another whiskey-focused tasting.

Not ever been to a tasting as such, but have tasted one or two. Like anything in life you get what you pay for. Cheap shit whisky is like cheap shit chinese brake pads, crap and could kill you.
Of course there are the really expensive whiskies, much like Moto GP brake pads, wasted on you or me.
I prefer a Speyside single malt, light in colour, not blended. Bit like Brembo or SBS brake pads, good quality, cost a bit more but ultimately more satisfying.
Co-op actually do a quite nice one called Glen Moray give that a try and see what you think. A double with 1 piece of ice works for me.

I have quite an extensive whisky collection, would love to find a decent tasting event but haven't found one yet. Last one was something like 10 bottles you could buy in tesco and a stuck up bell end talking bollocks.

I never liked it until someone introduced me to Jack Daniels which is a bit less firey.
I'm still no connoisseur but do appreciate it.
Having let that slip once, people keep giving me a bottle at Christmas, birthdays or whatever and I never actually buy any Laughing

Must say if you have any kind of muscular ache e.g. neck/shoulder it really does help to have some in the evening, you will sleep better if nothing else - so great excuse 'medicinal' Thumbs Up

As a whisky drinker myself may I suggest you follow a simple regime of strengths.

Start on the 1s and work up.

It's not hoccus pokus as you will defo not be able to appreciate the tones of the lighter malts if you guzzle doon the stronger The Macallan and Lagavulin early on.

You will suffer less Burns (Not the Bard) if you anaesthetise your thrapple with a little dram of Glenkinchie or similar ilk.

If you are indeed into it, might I suggest/highly recommend, Collins Gem Pocket Whiskies book for your perusal

Macallan is the bollocks,my favourite Scotch.

It's a craking distinctive swally but dinna nara yer options Son. Very Happy

There are hundreds and the trick is to visit the places where they're made. As a 'Culturally Enlightening' trip of course.

If I were to put a favourite up it would be the aforementioned Glenkinchie and any Glenmorangie. Preferably an 18yr + if affordable. Sad

Ordered Thumbs Up

I think I'm going to go to this one: https://www.whiskytastingroom.com/whisky-tasting-rooms-and-sessions - the £30 one. Seems like a good place to start for a newbie!

The key for me was a drop of spring water to dilute the alcohol slightly.

It was a learning experience. I learned I don't like whiskey much, as indeed I don't like beer either; whiskey being to beer what brandy is to wine. I'm more fond of the grape than the grain.

(For avoidance of confusion, I spell it "whiskey" because I'm Irish.)

Whisky uses Barley as the sugar provider.
Beers mainly use other wheat-ish grains.

And they already put up to 50% water in the whisky before they bottle it.
Why add more? Smile
There is no law about liking it which is fair.
I cannot palate or tollerate Tequila.
Gins, of a good pedigree, are a different animal though. Cool

I can taste iodine in the island malts from the seaweed malting process. It's another specific character about whisky.

Strange how your tastes change as you get older. I used to really enjoy whiskey but can't stand it nowadays. The only spirit I touch now is rum.

Very much so is it not meant to be something like every 10 years, i used to not like coffee or Guiness and my taste in Whisky has changed as well.

Beer is primarily made from barley and hops, along with water and yeast.

That isn't to say that there aren't wheat beers; there are. But most beers are made from barley. Whiskey is distilled from a weak beer, as one part of the process. And of course American bourbon is made from corn, etc.

I once tried to appreciate Whiskey.

I was bought a very expensive shot of 'something special'. The price was ludicrous! I'm afraid, even this tasted like chemical waste to me.
