Attempt by a council employed sparks after I told in-laws to complain about shoddy workmanship after new boiler fitted in kitchen...https://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo91/johnfitskitchens/Mobile%20Uploads/IMAG1478_zpsdv8gvlzb.jpg
Wrapped more tape around the chocolate block and tucked it up in the boiler, on the phone in the morning.

Are you sure an Electrician did that? looks like a DIY bodge or by a plumber.

Not even sure most wholesalers I've ever used would even stock yellow insulation tape nowadays.

Was fitted by the plumber, who should have part p certified it as in a kitchen, but the council probably play by their own rules, two further council maintenance men told them it was OK when questioned. When I noticed it I recommend that they re-contacted the council, which they did. Sparky turns up, says it should never have been left like that, adds more tape and tucks it up in the boiler. Problem is, the in-laws are two old people that don't know any better, so the first problem is the bodge, and the second problem is that they have been repeatedly fobed off. Welwyn Hatfield Community housing trust are running the show on behalf of the council.....or maybe its the council with a fancy name, all amounts to the same thing as far as I am concerned. Tenants pay rent and get substandard service.

Ahh I see, last time I checked council tenants pay substandard rent.
But Im sure the complaint about the free electrician will be taken to the highest level.
Why dnt you get a quote from a private sparks, just for giggles. i expect he'd charge about 3 weeks rent to fix that.
Assuming you can find one to come out at all for a piss ant job like that.

False equivalence, Come on dude Laughing I also surmise that you of all people would be hunting that sparky down if he did that to one of your properties, standards are standard.

It also was not a piss ant job, it was a boiler installation that was not completed properly.

Well aye, any housing association type housing the tenants are paying naff all rent and get to often live in bigger places than I do THEN complain at the standard of it.

I am having a new central heating system installed here and I would be upset if it was left in that state... but it would have cost me £3700 not been effectively free. Beggars and choosers...

My younger sister who has just moved out of her housing association place because she 'didn't like the area' wasn't impressed when they put in a brand new kitchen for her... and didn't get it when I explained that when I do the same there will be chump change from 10k if I am lucky.

But if course my life us easy having to work for everything I have... lands on my lap it does... Rolling Eyes

So someone who pays lower rent then others shouldn't complain about potentially dangerous work carried out on their property by apparently qualified tradesmen?

Laughing

There really is some green-eyed viewing about.

These people are of a time when council housing was the .norm, they have both worked all their lives and pay their rent in their one bed bungalow without assistance or benefit from any government agency. They are entitled to safe and competent repair to the current standards.

Lazy and half arsed with the taped chockie pushed up but is it actually dangerous or are there other issues?

No one should be poking screw drivers into a boiler with everything live Thinking

It is without doubt a shoddy job and not one that I would complete or be happy with someone else completing on my behalf.
I'd be worrying about the standard of this guy's workmanship that isn't immediately visible.

It would take 15 minutes and £2 to sort that.

Sealed enclosure, with the terminal strip inside that.

Or just take the small bit of cable and connector blocks out and just wire the remaining cable straight into the boiler lol

So nice to see the Competent Person Scheme doing such a great job at stopping cowboys.

Frak me if I can find a way to actually shop a bodger. But they have a very nice, reassuring looking logo.

The chocolate style connectors are reasonably safe uncovered if in an inaccessible and dry location Covering with tape will make the join more attractive to spiders or mice wanting nest material - probably does more harm than good.

Never ask a plumber to do anything other than plumb, they'll almost certainly butcher it, be it
floorboard, wall or wiring. True properly qualified multitraders are very very rare and are often found doing very nicely in the private sector fitting kitchens.

Or could it be that council workers are often really just subcontractors these days?
Or maybe they are simply sick of their more typical standard of "client"? Most of the guys I worked with on the council saw the vast majority of tenants as chiseling scumbags. Hilarious really, as thats pretty much how I feel about trade unions. Still, they got their come-uppance in the end.

Thames Accord took over from London borough of Barking and Dagenhams in house contract services dept. And promptly laid off half the councils "workforce" soon after. Laughing

I left before the changeover but used to work in the stores. Turns out its far cheaper to let a private firm do it than a bunch of unionised crybabys. Fancy that! With regard to earlier comment, I do most of my own electrical work and just get someone to sign it off. Simple domestic electrical work isn't exactly rocket science. Everything I've done has passed muster, first time. Yet I haven't had a moments training.

A properly managed rental property must have a certificate of electrical safety, its a 7 page document which stands for 5 years or until changes are made. If an electrician had done that at one of my places he wouldn't be getting paid until rectification. But without the ability to withold payment, you kinda get what you are given. 99% of council tenants wouldn't even bother to check the work in my experience, after all its "free"... So you can't be that surprised that the operative sent tried to pull a fast one. Those lads are usually paid per call, more calls equals more cash. I'd not be surprised if the quality of apprentices has dropped considerably too since my time on the council. Assuming they still train lads up that is...

I'm not disputing that its poor quality work, but I wouldn't call it dangerous either, an outlet with umpteen devices plugged into it is considerably more dangerous imo and I see that all over the place.
A "proper" sparks will have that sorted in 10 mins flat. Wasn't trying to dig you out, am just on holiday and typing on a stupid fucking Kindle takes ages.

You really don't think so?

There's no support for the cable outer, so if it had a tug accidentally the conductors pull out of the chocolate block and you have bare live conductors floating around, that's if it doesn't arc out and catch fire in the process.
