Split / rivet link and wasn't lubed when it was assembled would be my guess.

Sounds plausible. I did notice a good load of gunk on the new one when the chap put it on.

It was never ran dry (in my ownership) and the rest of the chain was fine with no tight spots.

Sprockets were good too (supersprox) felt a shame to replace them...

Yup, an O / X ring chain is supposed to have grease packed between the rings. The rivet link is no exception.

With an O / X ring chain virtually none of the lube you lob on the chain will get past the seals and into the inside of the links. So if not enough is put in place when the link is assembled then it will stay dry for the (somewhat abbreviated) life of the chain.

^^ This. That wear looks like a pedal cycle chain where the muppet has been using a 'professional' chain cleaner with a degreaser then using wet chain oil applied pre-ride rather than a dry wax lube applied post-ride.
