Used to use Fdisk, part of me is thinking about making bootable USB with it, the other part of thinks that should be an alternative for low level formatting

I always do at least one pass of f-disk if I am going to recycle a drive, it removes the protected recovery partition that normal formatting wont remove along with going some way to removing anything lurking on the drive

any suggestions on a good replacement for this now aging software?

1. DBAN is a good live CD eraser
2. Encrypt drives in the first place with Veracrypt then you just need to wipe the key header. You can also de facto erase by setting the password to some garbage like qc5&g7sQKjh4}bE<W^72J$. Hardware crypto can be ok but some of the implementations have serious flaws (e.g WD elements ultra) and some BIOS restrict the password length and complexity

Windows PE if you need to clean the operating system hard drive.

Google automated installation toolkit on how to make a PE disk.

If the drive is other to the operating system, ignore above.

If you are in 7 8 or 10 or PE.

Type diskpart

List disk

Select disk (whatever number is the disk)

Clean. (this removes all partitions

Or clean all

Clean all does every sector not just headers.

Then

Format fs=ntfs

there is an overwrite command for multi passes.
