Got 4 new tyres fitted in the middle of last week, and today I could hear a noise that sounded a little like a flat tyre. Stopped and had a look, and the rear wheel's bolts were loose. Before I go kicking off with them, what damage could've been potentially done to the wheels/tyres/any other parts of the car, so I know what to ask for as a resolution. Cheers.

Alloys or steelies?

I ask as lot of places have disclaimers saying its your responsibility to check the tightness of alloys (and maybe steellies)

Wasn't mentioned by anybody before or after the work was done. In fact, this is the first time I have ever heard that and I have had a few tyres replaced.

Nor do I want any. I just want to be sure that it won't have done any damage I can't see like tracking, wheel balance. Luckily, there's no physical damage as I noticed before the wheel came off.

In principal, it could have damaped the cones in the wheels, or on the bolts, induced bending loads on the bolts causing stress damage, or knackered the threads.

In reality, remove the bolts one by one, inspect them, lightly grease and refit to the specified torque.

If you take it back in, some money with a buzz gun will simply do them up to 11 million ftlbs while you're at best placated by the nice customer service lady.

Look at small print on invoice. Usually a disclaimer in there somewhere.
Next door neighbour lost a wheel nut after a new set of tyres fitted recently. Truth is, many folk don't so much as check tyre pressures and fluids so aren't likely to torque up wheel nuts, especially if they're female if I'm completely honest. Every time I use the wifes car I end up having to top something up or replace something Rolling Eyes
It's unlikely you'll get anything but denial and a nudge toward the small print.

I use a localish company - Horndean Tyres. They have a strong reputation for knowing what they're doing, and there are plenty of similar businesses with good reputations all over the country.

The best resolution you can hope for is to go back to Halfrauds to ask them about it and they'll point out to you the notices / warnings which say to check the wheel nuts after however many miles. Thumbs Up

Go back to said centre and kick up a fuss at the counter, most auto centres will have an auto data chart which chances are hasn't been followed. Halfords hate loose wheels and will usually try and get you to keep it quiet and not go to their head office about it.

Our apprentice left a wheel loose on an audi apparently, we had to buy the customer a new wheel as although it didnt come off it damaged the wheel where the bolts go through.
Go back and ask them to take every wheel off and look at them closely especially where the bolts conical faces go into the wheel.
Everyone makes mistakes, even tyre fitters and mechanics.

Aye. Buy stuff from them, sure. Trust them with anything more than fitting a bulb? Nope.

Never in my life have I ever done this. This is the first time I've heard it but I have also never had a wheel bolt come loose.

Many years ago after having new tyres fitted on a lease car, it developed a noise like a duff wheel bearing.

Called the breakdown company out, their man drove it around the block, proclaimed it was indeed a shot bearing and the car was recovered on a loader to a garage somewhere.

That's when they discovered the wheel was loose. Cue lots of accusing phone calls about me having not checked the wheel nuts. (first I'd ever heard of it)

There was nothing on the paperwork at that time saying to do so and their own mechanic obviously didn't bother either after driving it around the block.

Last I ever heard about it but I did notice it printed boldly on the next tyre invoice I had though.

And ?
Can you read ? Only there are signs up in every tyre place telling you this,
By having the signs up it gets them out of come back like this.
A lot even include this on the invoice receipt and in t & c's.

When I get tyres done on my van, it comes back with an annoying dangly thing on the gearstick telling me the nuts need checking after 50 miles uless they were fitted "cold".

So if they have the van overnight then fit the tyres, they don't need checking. Presumably some thermal expansion effect.

I had 4 new tyres fitted on my Aygo recently by the local Halfords Autocentre, they did a great job. Phoned me up beforehand to confirm tyres had arrived and that 2 of them were the wrong size but the right size would be there by the time I arrived.
Then let me know as soon as it was done, all the time very friendly and helpful.

Never mentioned anything about checking wheel nuts though.

Never grease or oil bolts unless the torque setting is given as wet value.

Most torque figures are given as dry, you can easily stretch (beyond the expected amount) or snap them if you apply the same torque to a wet bolt.

Interesting, is this specifically a problem with Alloy then?
I ask as I have torqued my bikes up in all kinds of weather and not found that they vary much at all.

Are they now? What percentage are given as dry versus wet, and whose figures are we talking about anyway?
