Hello everybody,

I'm buying a new motorbike, but I don't have yet a full license (matter of a month or so). Obviously, I won't use the bike till I won't have a license (again, matter of a month or so). In terms of insurance, what should I do? Is it legal to just don't pay the insurance till I won't have a license? (obviously, in the meanwhile, I won't drive the bike).

thanks,
Mauro

What if it gets stolen? You need to insure it.

I'd type more but I'm currently trying to buy a washing machine. I don't wear clothes but will buy some next month.

If it's regisgtered, it needs to either be insured of SORNed.

Okay, thanks!

I'll SORN the bike till I won't get the license sorted out, then! I found the full explaination (When you need to make a SORN ) here: https://www.gov.uk/sorn-statutory-off-road-notification

It seems to me an easy procedure to SORN the bike using the DVLA website (https://www.gov.uk/make-a-sorn), and -in my understanding- it can be unSORNed by just paying the road tax (https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax)

cheers,
Mauro

And, obviously, if it is SORNed you have to keep it off road somewhere.

Pay for bike and ask dealer to hold on to it, while ensuring its covered by their insurance whilst in their care?

I did this last year. Wanted to take advantage of the Honda summer 500 pounds off offer. Brought the bike in August and the dealer sat on it for me until I passed my test in October. By far the best option if it is something you have open to you. No need to stress about insurance or someone reversing into it etc etc.

I can't see this being the case. Otherwise how do they pre-register bikes/cars?

Some dealers say that they won't register it. I imagine they're just covering their backs, I had that many years ago with a car purchase.

Presumably you're having it delivered? If they give you any lip, just ask them whether they want the money or not. I imagine that they will.

Heck, if it's brand new then you can go ahead and register it yourself:

https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration/new-registrations

Oh, look, no requirement to have insurance.

Why the rush? Bikes are still going to be there in a months time when you've got a license.

"Insightful". Is this truly some one-of-a-kind deal? Better to have the money in your pocket until you're ready to ride.

Maybe he had to order the bike in and it's coming a bit earlier than needed?

I'd personally wait until after I'd done my test without its an absolute steal.

You might fall in love the whatever bike you do your training on, you might want a completely different style, there could be a newer model around the corner or any number of variables where your dream bike now isn't your dream bike when you pass.
