Hey BCF, last time I made a thread asking how the fuck I get a graduate job because clueless etc. After feeling extremely defeated after getting NO interviews for hundreds of applications (not kidding, was about 50-100 applications per week) and still working at bloody Domino's (need money init), I just got a call to offer me a job in a software company. Oddly, it was the first and only interview I've had in my whole job search these past few months.

Granted the job is very basic stuff (office junior, making the tea and that) but it already pays more than working like a dog in this fast food place and will set me up for future office-oriented work later down the line. Did I also mention the office is literally opposite where I live lmao? They did talk about how they want someone who they can promote into a different department within a year so I guess that sounds promising. Might get to use my degree then.

Bloody done it man, feels good.

Don't actually know why I'm posting here but I figured it'd help motivate any 20 something with a degree who's feeling defeated/rejected. Just keep applying and you might get lucky, I never thought I'd actually land a 9-5.

Well done, get your head into the work and figure out who does what and go out of your way to make yourself useful (but avoid being a nuisance) and soon that will be 8-6 Rolling Eyes

(but promotion will come) Laughing

Nicely done, you've got your foot in the door now so you'll just have to prove yourself and that should open up a lot of opportunities.

I guess I was lucky that I got the second job I applied for Shocked

Nice one. Good to hear.

It gives you a chance to reinvent your character and the way people see you too, in a new environment.

Enjoy.

Nicely done, it only takes one.

I'd be a model employee by day, while networking like crazy by night to springboard yourself somewhere else. Sod being a dogsbody for a year. They'll have zero loyalty to you and will ditch you without a moment's hesitation, so get your retaliation in pre-emptively.

I'm such an optimist. Wink

Karma Kudos for not giving up.

+1 on being a model employee, but also remember to have a (charming obviously) personality. Lots of employees in my line of work act like silent robots all day and are scared to poke their head up and ask questions. In fact, when I was hiring and firing I wanted to keep people that had something about them and weren't afraid to talk to others.

Good on ya.

I agree with Chris. Don't be a silent robot, remember if you're in your early 20s, you still have 35 years of doing this ... so you need to be a bit proactive to make sure you can enjoy whatever you do to earn a living (well, as much as you can anyway).

Good work. It's so tough for grads at the moment. Once you have a foot in the door you can start climbing that ladder!

Generally speaking if you can find ways, even little ones, to save money, increase productivity or make peoples lives easier then you'll go far. Baby steps though, at least until you get to know the personalities.

Which is exactly why I hated working in an office. Strange how you can sit next to somebody for 40 hours a week and barely hear a grunt from them, whereas people at my current work will talk all day just because you've walked past them.

I am service engineer and could never imagine working in an office,
Use to work in factories abit, prefer traveling around these days, but I think service engineers talk to themselves alot or maybe that's just me,
Even started to do stupid voices when I do it

Quick edit

Forgot to say congrats Smile
All the best

I'd rather sit next to a silent person than someone who won't keep their trap shut, which is unfortunately exactly what has happened to me, and the nob keeps stealing my network cable whenever I leave my desk. Evil or Very Mad

Cheers for your encouraging words guys, and the advice. If anyone does work in an office environment and wants to give me some advice before I start then by all means do Very Happy

I do plan to make a good impression and will knuckle down now that I'm in, that's a given.

@Ribenapigeon yeah I mean, roughly 10 applications per day to all sorts of things, not just office work, that I wasn't getting any replies back from at all. That's about 70 a week. Only takes a few hours per day to apply to that many. Started to think employers were completely allergic to anything with my name on it.

Your doing well if you can find that many to apply for. It takes me all evening to do a job application and that's with cutting and pasting relevant shit from previous applications.

Here is my advice, I worked for 28 years with office based staff. The ones who got promoted or moved on to better jobs all observed the following rules,

Don't fart or burp or scratch in front of colleagues.
Pay good attention to smartness and personal hygiene.
Don't bring in smelly food to eat at your desk.
Never let your boredom/frustration/incredulity show.
Never be surprised by the pettiness and politicking of your colleagues.
Don't get involved in or repeat gossip.
Don't have a poo at work.

I of course indulged in all of the above, but then again, I was the boss already Wink

Job jobbed (literally..) Thumbs Up

Good to hear from someone doing well instead of people just constantly bitching about their situations & doing nothing to help themselves.

Does it count if they're all for the same job, under different names?
