Not very well worded is it. If you're in a line of traffic you could very well be at a standstill. Slowing down wouldn't be an option. That's not the official test though, is it?

Not quite sure why there is no option of 'Lock the back wheel, and screech to a halt, forcing them to either take avoiding action, potentially into oncoming traffic, or to ram you at speed.

Can you tell the level of distain I have for that question and the 'correct' answer?

No it's not the official test, I bought the DVSA app for iPad and can pass that with ease now after much practice but this was just an online one I was doing and it really threw me and yeah Andy that's what I thought, driver behind you hits you it's his fault and slow moving lane so just keep doing what you're doing I thought

The option to slow down implies that the traffic is moving, although the question could have been worded better.

The reason for slowing down is to increase the distance between you and the vehicle in front. That way, you can engage in emergency or urgent braking more gradually (more time to anticipate the need to brake, more space and time to come to a stop, or slow to an appropriate speed for the situation ahead), thus reducing the chance of the tailgating fuckwit from running into the back of you because the tailgating fuckwit has a bit more time to work out what the appearance of the bright red light on the back of your bike means and take appropriate action.

Continuing at the same speed is only valid if there is already plenty of room to the next vehicle, such that any emergency braking can be done in the aforementioned more gradual - and tailgating fuckwit-compliant - manner.

(Moving to the left and waving them past is also a valid answer - just after I passed my test, I had a Golf tailgate me for a few miles when out for my first run down the borders. A very twisty road, traffic doing about 40 or so, and this fanny was less than a car length behind for most of the stretch. I thought I had a pushy asshole, until I moved over, waved them past, and got a cheery flash of the hazards to say "ooh, thank for letting me through", at which point the moron proceeded to tailgate the next vehicle...)

I agree that there should be an answer along the lines of "safely filter away from the tailgating fuckwit at the earliest opportunity".

This is a real question - I had it on my theory test.

The "theory" is that if the car behind is tailgating you there's a danger they will hit you up the arse if you have to slam the anchors on. They say you can reduce the odds of that happening by slowing down and increasing your safety margin ahead, trying to keep a 4-second gap around you. Generally you'd want 2 seconds between you and the car in front and 2 seconds between you and the car behind - but, if the driver behind you is only leaving you 1 second, you should increase the gap in front of you to 3 seconds to keep that 4-second margin around you.

It's "defensive driving" - designed to reduce the chance that you will have to stop suddenly and giving you a chance to spread your braking out over a greater distance.

Why are you in a line of traffic?
What is wrong with you?
Why aren't you filtering?

This.
Nip past the car in front (and the next few) and make the tailgater someone else's problem.

As above, although I sometimes prefer:

☑ weave wildly from side to side, then when clear, pull to the right hand side of the road, brake, then tuck in behind them just for lulz. Then filter past.

Yes, also by slowing down you ensure that if the fuckwit does hit you, he'll do so at a lower speed.
