I'm no gaming or hardware geek, but I just had a live demo of the HTC Vive system using a few demo environments, including a bespoke one for the work we do.

I feel like the future arrived today. It was not unlike my expectation of a holodeck. One moment I am standing in a white space with a few grid-like markings, then next I am in a new place where I can interact with stuff - open drawers, manipulate machines, explode them and inspect the parts, put my head inside them as they are working and so on. I can teleport around the space. I can paint in mid-air, then immerse myself in the painting.

I can only imagine the gaming potential for this. It was truly and believably immersive with almost no viewpoint or motion lag in any direction. I had a controller in each hand which I could see in the VR world, which meant my 'hands' were part of the experience.

It obviously comes with a heavy hardware demand - no idea what the processors were, but as well as the headset and controllers there were two boundary sensors that effectively laid out the staging area and tracked you within it - inside the VR experience there were boundary limit lines so you knew you were approaching the edge of the 'safe' zone.

I have experienced Occulus Rift and Samsung Gear VR. This was on a different level.

I'm all over the vive, waiting for the 1080 to come out then it's a double purchase together with the Vive Laughing

Best is pretty difficult to quantify. In terms of time played, Final Approach, but thats mostly because I haven't got elite reinstalled yet (hoping they fix the rendering issues in the next update).

Other than that, Holopoint is awesome, vanishing realms will be when its done, and budget cuts is probably up there in killer app territory. A few of the people on my friedns list appear to have been playing a lot of hover junkers, but I can't get into it.

100% best experience with it was my wife (completely uninterested in games) spend 4 hours solid playing job simulator.

I'm not too interested in the games, more the experiences....

Have you tried virtual desktop (steam) - Looks promising

You're looking at a hefty investment if you need a new PC as well.

I reckon £600 would see the base tower. Then you need the GPU + Vive (From £1,000 to £1,300 (Vive & GPU), depending on the GPU you pick).

I reckon you could build a pc to that spec including GPU for £600 if you're happy with second hand components.

The vive is still pricey mind, I'd quite like one though. I've fancied GTA with VR for a while now.

The screens in the HMD aren't quite there for virtual desktop. Its usable, and great for films, but you wouldn't want to be in it all day for normal desktop stuff.

You probably could, I was just basing my prices off new. GTX 970 is minimum card requirement (and AMD equivalent), which are about £250 new, so you could probably get one for £120 ish second hand.

Even though they say the 970 / AMD is the requirement, like I said before, we aren't even seeing AAA titles developed for VR yet and keep in mind the Vive has 2160 x 1200 resolution @ 90hz so 90fps for super smoothness... I think the 970 will let people down in 6 months time when bigger VR titles come out with high end graphics.

Few other questions...

How long is the tether and does it become annoying or do you forget it's there after you've been using it for a while?

The virtual movie theatres.... does it really immerse you in the feeling you're actually sat in a cinema and the size of the virtual cinema screen feels giant?

I have it in my head that because of micro head movements, sitting in a VR cinema, the experience of watching a film would be slightly "bumpy" with your head movements?

Long, my room is the size of an averaginsh garage (built on top of one) and I can go one end to the other with plenty of slack. It doesn't go away, you can definitely feel it round your legs, but it's not that bad at all.

The screen stays fixed in the 'room' so moving your head is no different to doing it in a real cinema.

Yes, for the original GTA, so I can finally look around a building to see if someone is waiting to shoot me Smile

Space Engineers, FPS and driving games will be good to start with.

I'm realy not sure what you mean, the displays themselves are fixed relative to your face, and a driven at 90hz. so theoretically if you move your head faster than that then yes the screen won't catch up, but in practice your head doesn't move that fast, your eyes compensate for it and everything works out, so the virtual screen appears static.

I made this precise observation in the OP and to the guy demonstrating it to me... there was almost no perceptible lag or latency, only if you really quickly whipped your head around. The high refresh rate makes it pretty natural.

If you go to the building on the left then try to see who's hiding at the top.

As for vertigo, I'll probably be fine until I die and it zooms in.

There are some custom drivers you can get that allow you to play GTA5 in VR. I considered them, but at £40 or so they were asking, I couldn't justify it.
