Why do these parents think taking their kids on holiday is so important? My family went on holiday only three time in my childhood. Once to Scotland (shit) once to Normandy (great) and once to London (stayed in company apartment in Mayfair, very cool). I don't think I would have missed out particularly if we'd never gone on holiday at all. As a child I was perfectly capable of having a good time just larking about with my mates during normal school holidays.[/quote]

My parents took me all over the place when I was younger. It massively boradened my horizons.

I swam in the sea, learned to snorkel, row a boat. I played with children from other countries. I tried new and different foods. I was exposed to foreign languages and peole who were a different colour (very few non-whites in the North East of Scotland).

I think there would be degrees of usefulness though. Depends what you do on your holidays. I'm not sure how much you'd get from staying on an all inclusive site on Mallorca.

Babies and toddlers shouldn't be allowed on planes. I dont want to hear your fucking brat screaming blue bloody murder for hours on end on a flight I paid an arm and a leg to be on. Had one on the way to Croatia 2 rows away going fucking berserk for the last hour of the flight. Selfish bastard parents, keep em at home until they can behave.

Perhaps, so that gives them the right to annoy everyone else with their potato baby that couldn't tell the difference if it was sat in a field for a fortnight. Great! Thank god for adults only resorts, the carriers are missing a trick not doing adult only flights though. I'd happily pay extra to guarantee a child free flight. There should be a minmum age of 6 on standard flights.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you. Nothing worse than screaming brats when you're shopping, in the docs, or whatever.

But you can see the argument. Laughing

I take my son on holiday (albeit only in this country/IOM for aforementioned squarking on the plane reasons) in the hope that the experiences will help him avoid being a lonely, bitter middle aged man who lives alone with his only enjoyment coming from being a bell end and making others miserable Thumbs Up

Do you really need to bring your kids home with you after you've been on holiday?

Not if you're doctors, and go to Portugal.

And she's called Maddy.

Do you think you'll ever have kids? I'll lol hard if one them turns out to be a hyper nutcase tantrum thrower. Laughing
Seriously though since having kids I find I can ignore other peoples quite easily.

My wifes vagina snaps closed like a bear trap at the mere mention of motherhood, so no I doubt it very much.

I went on holiday a lot as a child, and had much the same experiences as Stinkwheel. Good for learning languages too, I picked up a load of Dutch by osmosis when we spent a week over there.

I would argue that it's more important as a child than as an adult. I certainly enjoyed holidays more when someone else was paying for all of it.

As always the answer is 'it depends'.

Taking your kid out of school during exams because your all inclusive package deal to Malta is a bit cheaper out of season and you want a rest for a week, no.

Taking your kid out of school where they will miss a weeks colouring in in order to introduce them to a foreign country they may not have the opportunity to visit again, sure.

Issue is deciding between the two unfortunately.

It's hard to see how kids especially little tiny ones benefit from a weeks all-inclusive in Benidorm taken for economic reasons i e to save a few quid.

However when I were a kid, our holidays were in Wales where we did stuff that elf and safety would frown on and our parents didn't know about.

There are few things more educational than realising you have drifted too far out to sea in small dinghy with just one paddle and have to negotiate your way back to shore without getting tipped out by the waves and before anyone notices you've nicked their boat.

Or finding a cow carcass on a beach and climbing inside the dried out hide to look at the skellington.

Or fishing, getting a hook stuck in your finger, or robbing birds nests, climbing a cliff face and getting stuck with no adults around to help.

Or driving your dad's car round an abandoned airfield without his knowledge.

Or exploring an unfenced, abandoned mineshaft. Very Happy

Never did us any harm...... So yes, you should take them on holiday, in the UK and you can spend the week in the pub or sleeping it off while your kids run feral.

Now THAT'S educational.

Isee. This is supposed to be about the guy who took his kid on holiday in term time and just fucked the council off in court when they tried to fine him.

To that I'd say schoolstake far too much upon themselves.

I'd also say I have serious doubts as to the logic they employ to justify their actions.

Yes, there is a clear correlation between poor attendance and poor grades BUT -and teachers of all people should know this- CORRELATION DOES NOT EQUALL CAUSATION!

The kids who have chaotic lives or serious illnesses perform poorly and also have poor attendance as a result of their chaotic lifestyle/illness.

When my folks took me out of school for holidays, they went to the school, asked for and were given some work for me to do so I didn't fall too far behind the class. It wasn't much. The teachers agreed with them that it was valuable life experience. You couldn't do that now (in England, Scotland is thankfully a more enlightened country) or you'd land up being fined. You'd just have to lie about it and pull a sickie.

My boss went to her kids school a year or so back for work to do on their holiday and was told the id would learn more on holiday than in the class room.

They did tour Iceland though, not really comparable with a week on a beach in Ibiza.

I don't think it's the teachers who are to blame for this one. I know several teachers who have advised parents on the best way to get time off for holidays authorised. What we're dealing with here are the bureaucrats in the local council offices/academy management offices and little hitlers masquerading as head teachers who are more interested in rules, paperwork and statistics than they are in the welfare and education of children.

The biggest joke is the last few weeks of term before breaking up for summer.

Nothing gets done that is educational, yet the kids can't be pulled out of school for this period.
