Hi,

Just thought I would start a thread regarding thermal cameras and whether you guys have any experience with them?

Recently moved in with my girlfriend so have abit more of a disposable income,
Currently looking at this one

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B01478QCHU/ref=dp_ob_neva_mobile?th=1&psc=1

It's bottom of the scale as in a cheap one,
I am a BMS engineer so would also use it to help with work,
Checking fan coil units and things like that which are not always easily accessible, it could basically tell me if a valve actuator is working,

I doubt work would accept it as expenses and pay for it, they already supply me with a bunch of metres but I just fancy trying a thermal camera out,

Maybe I should avoid one that is a phone attachment?
Wouldn't want to spend much over 200,

So anyone used one?

We had them on ship for looking for hot spots on the main busbars, which they were excellent for. The latest ones we had also could detect leaking methane and refrigerant gasses.

They were very silly money though, in the 10's of thousands of pounds but when the charter rate of the ship was $45000 per day the owners used to give us toys like this to play with. Thumbs Up

I have no idea how good the cheap ones are TBH. Most of the time I was/am quite happy using a laser thermometer for monitoring purposes.

Allegedly will cost £600, but if you're soon due a phone upgrade you can factor the cost of that in with your £200 budget?

Used a Fluke one a few times and they're great. However, having googled them and seen the price I think they may be a tad outside of the budget.

The flir phone looks good,
Not due an upgrade for at least another year,
I just go through phases where I fancy spending some money,
I think the ones I am looking at are more of a toy,

They would work for checking fan coil units, door curtains and such,
The flir one that I linked has an internal battery that can not be replaced so abit rubbish,

There is a seek one that runs from your phone battery

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00Y2QO79I/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1463342313&sr=8-1&pi=SX200_QL40&keywords=thermal+seek&dpPl=1&dpID=41S7S4qvF8L&ref=plSrch

My money could probably be better spent elsewhere,
Wouldn't mind one though

Went ahead and ordered one of those 'seek' thermal camera's,
Should be turning up in abit,
I'll try it at work tomorrow see how it works, I'll be in a plantroom with boilers, air handling units and such, so plenty to point it at,
I'll operate an ahu cooling valve and see if it can show the differential change in real time,
Fook knows, be good if it works..
