Hi

I wonder if anyone has been in a similar situation or if anyone could offer some advice?

I failed my unrestricted Mod 2 a few weeks ago for not making progress on a 60mph road I was doing 30-40 (it was a bendy road mind!), I had no minors however.

In an effort to save some cash (the school wanted to charge me £270 to retake it) my mate agreed to let me use his bike, subject to correct insurance being in place so I booked a test which is this Monday morning 23/05. However, he’s crashed his bike last night, he’s fine but the bike is not looking good and needs some work doing so there’s no way I can use it on Monday.

I previously had training with the school from CBT up to my failed Mod 2, however I asked if could take me up on their bike but they are ‘busy’, as are all the other local schools I’ve tried.

I thought about buying the bike I want post passing and using that for the Mod 2, taking it over to Wakefield in a van and doing the test but dealerships won’t release a bike unless they see your licence showing relevant entitlement.

I want to keep the test date so my options appear to be:

1. Hire a bike (is this even possible)?

2. Buy a bike privately (although I’d prefer the warranty offered by a dealer)

Can anyone offer any advice?

Thanks

I've never heard of a dealer not releasing a bike without seeing your full licence, I bought mine from a dealer when I only had a CBT no mention was made of my license I just arranged to have it delivered to my house.

Does the deal include free insurance for the first couple of weeks?

That insurance may require you to have a full licence.

Which dealer and why? Their legal responsibility starts and ends with ensuring that the bike is roadworthy and as described. What you do with it the moment money changes hands is literally none of their business, and they're idiots if they try to make it so. You could be buying it as a present for someone else, for all they know.

They probably are idiots, mind.

The same dealers that are (apparently) messing you around before they even have your money? Thinking

If you've been to a dealer, said you want to pick it up in a van or get it delivered, and they'd really flat out said they don't want your money, then I'd cheerfully give it to a private seller instead.

Their loss, your gain.

The dealer I got my bike from insisted in seeing my license too. I had put the deposit down and the finance was all in place about 2 months before my A license test. They said they needed to see the full license before I could take her away though. This was fine by me as I would rather the bike stayed at the dealers anyway as opposed to outside my house with no insurance, but it seemed to be a condition none the less. Maybe it was because it was on finance there was a clause about having the relevant license or something?

I don't think there is a solution for you, well, not a straight forward one. Any hire company is going to want to see you have the correct license before they lend you a bike. Buying a bike privately would of course give you the bike, but is it what you want? Lot of money for a day and then think I don't like this bike anymore, I want a bigger / better one.

Depending on how good a mate he is, maybe he could hire a bike, give you a ride over to the test centre and then you get on with it and hope you don't stack it into something. Not sure if the test centre will want to see an insurance certificate covering you for the day, in which case you are stuffed I guess.

Get mate to hire bike. Buy insurance to ride it (might be bit of a hassle).
Might not be totally legit, but I can't see a problem.

Give A2B a ring - I passed with them recently. Based in Knaresborough but from your dot you're in Leeds so not far on the train. £120 (I think) for the ride to Wakefield, test, ride back. They're probably booked up but worth a go. I'd phone the mobile number on their website rather than emailing them...

Thanks for the replies.

I'll try A2B in the morning, just saves hassle of renting, deposit etc and my mates time.

I really don't see why dealers are responsible for checking licences, like Rogerborg said what if it is a present for someone!

Anyway hopefully I'll pass on Monday and it will be all the sweeter for navigating through all this rubbish!

I wouldn't get too hung up about it.
Paying another 400-500 quid for a full mod 2 is going to be infinitely cheaper when you factor in the cost of a bike after you pass.
125's are rediculously overpriced, as are 400's. You'll save all that cash back when you pay 700 quid for a half baked bandit. ..... or 900 quid for a mid 90's yzf ..... or even 1600 for a nice triumph triple...

If you do pass your test don't be a homo and get something lame. Go mental. It's your license, you earned it, enjoy it.

Nope, you just tick a box.
