Hope some one can advise. I upgraded my FZ750 with R6 Blue spot callipers (with new pads) and an R1 master cylinder. The problem is I cannot get the system to firm up despite every attempt at bleeding. I removed the callipers from the carriers and inserted a "spacer" between the pads and the system felt fine. I bled one more time (no evidence of air bubbles). Replaced the callipers and the system once again goes spongy! Any thoughts or advice would be very gratefully received!!!!

Hi

Who made the adaptors? Are they holding the calipers in perfectly line with the disks.

All the best

Katy

Not sure where they originated from (came with the callipers) but they are beautifully machined included cutaways and threaded holes for the calliper bolts. Pretty sure that they line up ok on the disc.

If they're the same blue spots as the fzs600 (I think they are) it's because they're made by the devil himself specifically to piss you off.

I bought a mityvac to do mine with which made it much more straightforward.

Blue spots should bolt straight onto later FZs, if I remember correctly.

If you look at the lower one, it doesn't seem to be fully over the disc.

Should have mentioned that I also upgraded to FZR1000 wheels - which has a larger disc so the calliper would not bolt on directly

I reckon your adaptors are for early model Fzs that had vented disks.

Quite why you think that you can throw a loads of bits off loads of different bikes together and expect them to work together is a bit beyond me.

He's called nobby the bastard - what did you expect Laughing

Anyway stop acting so butthurt just because somebody said it like it is. If you've properly bled all of the bubbles out of the system and the lever is still spongy, then the issue is more than likely in the set up.

Quick way to prove things.
Unclamp the calipers from the carriers, easier if you have a hellper to support them. Apply brakes. If the lever is firm then your carriers are out of line. If still spongy, you have Blue spots, get used to bleeding them using all the tricks. I generally do mine by holding them upside down to get the air bubbles up to the bleed screw.

If you got them firm with the calipers off the carriers, then you got the air out of the system. I would be looking for a mechanical problem. In order of cost and difficulty, the following are worth checking:

1. Worn/notched pad pins, so the pins aren't moving smoothly. Clean up or replace the pins.
2. Sticky piston(s). Pistons out and cleaned up, seals out and scrape out any corrosion behind them in the caliper body.
3. Caliper carriers don't line up with the discs. Pain in the arse to correct.

Of course, before doing any of this, leave it for a few hours, squeeze the lever for 5 mins, and see if it firms up. Could just be tiny little bubbles in the line which take a surprisingly long time to travel to the top and vent out through the master cylinder.

Seing as it is a late model that came with the old gold four piston calipers, if you use the stock front wheel and discs the blue spots ought to bolt up to the forks without adaptors.

Many thanks everyone. It looks like it was the callipers not lining up properly on the disc. Undid the top calliper mounting bolt, loosened the lower one which allowed me to more the calliper down slightly and the brake lever firmed up perfectly! Will try the original FZ wheel and disc with the callipers mounted directly to the forks and hope that works. otherwise its a case of trying to find someone to make me new set of adaptors. Thanks again for all your help.

A friend had some adapter plates made up so that he could mount blue spot R1 calipers to his RD350LC and they worked a treat.Looked even better once the plats were anodised black Cool

Not sure what those forks are in the top pic but they look very similar to the ones on the front end of my FZR-R.I chose to mount some YZF750R 6 pot calipers but R1 calipers are well known to mount directly as well

Just a quick update - took the FZ for its first run since the winter overhaul and pre MOT test run. The new brake set up (FZR1000 discs, R6 bluespot callipers, R1 master cylinder, EBC pads, BTR hoses) is fantastic!
