FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE[*]

17TH May 2016

Ride to Work Week spotlights those who #commutehappy

Ride to Work Week 2016 is on between Monday 20th and Sunday 26th June. The campaign aims to raise the profile of commuting by motorcycle or scooter and to highlight the main benefits.

These include:

· Time saved – less time in traffic means more time in bed!
· Money saved – save on petrol spend more on you
· Easy parking – motorcyclists get into the smallest spaces
· Road skills improve - riders who drive are better car drivers too
· It’s just more fun – you’ll turn up to work with a smile on your face

Special content will be shared during the week via social media, using the hashtag #commutehappy

· Riders can share their own pictures and Ride to Work Week content via the Facebook page and Twitter in order to show the rest of the UK why their mode of transport is so enjoyable.

· Events will be held across the UK for the public and for employees at motorcycle friendly businesses. These range from ‘bikers breakfasts’ to VIP parking and free CBTs for non-riding staff.

· The Ride to Work Week team will also put on a programme of events and Get On free ride opportunities in Northamptonshire, where the County Council is the first in the UK to actively encourage a modal shift towards motorcycling (more info available on request).

· Special offers, promotions and giveaways will be available throughout the week. Watch the Facebook page for details. These usually include free commuter cover from insurers, and offers on top brands for clothing and accessories as well as prizes!

· IAM is offering FREE ‘buddy’ advanced taster rides for licence holders who want to check out their commute with a local advanced observer.

· BikeSafe is holding a special ‘Bridging the Gap’ weekend workshop on June 18th and 19th at Northamptonshire Police Headquarters for riders who want to improve their riding. Booking is essential. £45 for the course.

· People across the UK who want to try motorcycling for the first time can book a session at a Get On road show event. These are also on regularly throughout the year at Silverstone in Northamptonshire. Booking is via www.geton.co.uk

· Special hi-viz vests and t-shirts are available to those organising events by contacting Stevie or Sandra via press@ridetoworkweek.co.uk

For further information/high res images plus other slides with key messages on contact Stevie Muir on 07989 378597 or email press@ridetoworkweek.co.uk

Notes for Editors

· Riders are the happiest commuters. In a one off report by the Office for National Statistics, commuting via motorcycle, scooter and moped was found to have no negative impact on wellbeing on journeys up to 30 minutes long, in contrast to those using the bus, cycling, driving or walking, who all experienced a negative impact after just 15 minutes.

· Be nice to motorcyclists, they are reducing congestion for all road users. A study which modelled a modal shift towards powered two wheelers for one of the most congested roads in Europe found that if just 10% of car drivers swapped to a motorcycle, scooter or moped, then congestion was reduced for all road users by 40%. If 25% swapped, then congestion was eliminated altogether.

· Better car drivers. Motorcycle insurance company Carole Nash found motorcyclists’ knowledge of road safety is almost twice as good as those who only drive a car. To reflect this, they produced a special car insurance policy aimed at riders.

· More motorcyclists, safer roads. The Motorcycle Industry Association and the National Police Chiefs’ Council produced a framework of actions considering the idea that more powered two wheelers on the roads would increase awareness and reduce accidents. This is the same argument used by cycling lobbies and indeed an increase in both PTWs and bicycles is likely to benefit both groups.

· Ride to Work Week is organised by the Motorcycle Industry Association and it incorporates Ride to Work Day, which is on Monday 20th. www.ridetoworkweek.co.uk
ENDS ALL

[*] OK, one comment. Where does MAG get off putting "FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE" on their chunterings? Have they ever put "embargoed until the 33rd of Mayvember" ? If they did, would anyone in the actual press give 4-thousands of a stuff?

So if I already commute by bike should I take the car that week? As surely all the bikes used will free up the road space?

A question oft asked, never answered. The problem is: how do you reach bikers who don't bike?

There is at least some vague promise of "stuff" this year, rather than just "yay, biking". If I wasn't such an apathetic, irascible sod I might even consider doing some sort of "yay biking" evangelism in the office.

And I did get a little smile out of MAG promoting anything involving "hi-viz vests". Wink

Wow, no thanks. It's already hard enough for me to find parking space for the Kwak in central London without a load more bikers trying to do the same.

And if someone don't already commute by bike, chances are they don't have commuting listed on the insurance. So, they asking people to play insurance roulette for a week?

Ooh, nice one.

They do say: "Special offers, promotions and giveaways will be available throughout the week. [...] These usually include free commuter cover from insurers."

Sure, on new policies. I doubt anyone is offering to tack it on to an existing policy free and gratis. They might graciously agree to give away £2.50 worth of cover for just a £30 or £50 admin fee though. Wink

I want to drive to work that week. I don't want weekend wobblers out "commuting" plugging up all dat "filtering zone". - I know that won't happen but ...

Ooh let's have a commute week in the summer to convince people to ride bikes to work more ... even those who have a licence choose not to ride a bike to work.

The dildo I see riding to work pretty much every day, challenging oncoming artics is enough for most drivers on my commute.

I don't want more like that thank you. Car drivers on my commute are courteous and helpful. Not sure I want them pissed off by part timers who'll vanish after the damage is done.

I wish to protest, I am being discriminated against. As a retiree I have no work to ride to any longer, would the Borg consider taking up a case of discrimination on my behalf?

The best bikes always do use more fuel than a typical car. Laughing

I bet uberkron's cars use more fuel than his bikes though, and mine does just over half the mpg of my bikes too.

If ride to work week really did make the roads quieter, it would be a joyous week to be driving, and for some a time when 4wheels would be as quick to work as two.

Business as usual on my part then.

I do disagree with the whole "#commutehappy" balls. When I first started commuting it was fun but as time has passed and the majority of my riding has become commuting, my desire to even want to take an alternative route has almost vanished. Riding most of the year round in almost every kind of weather has taken its toll and leaves no fun to be had. It's a chore more than it is a joy.

It may be because I've ridden a tiddler for far too long or that I'm making excuses but when you're out and about on a bike commuting for the most part of the week the desire to find some joy in the idea of going for a social ride is burnt out and the idea unappealing.

Great "fun" for those who get to pick and chose when to ride their bike rather than as a "must have only mode of transport" tool. I sound old before my time, I'll stop.

*** FOR RELEASE WHEN YOU GET A MOMENT ***

My commute to work is around 13 miles along mostly rural roads, so little traffic to get through. It's a nice route to ride, although any time saved along the road is more than lost in the getting-changed-at-either-end faff.

My bike does out-mpg the car... although per capita it's not as good.

Parking is in a workplace car park with space for cars and bikes, so no benefit there.

Road skillz - yeah, I guess it keeps the cobwebs off.

"It's just more fun" - I suppose it is, when the weather is OK; I guess June offers a better statistical chance of this, especially over a whole week.

Oh wait - I also drop two kids at school on the way to work. How do I #commutehappy now then MAG?

*** ENDS ***

I don't know how long you've been riding or commuting but I'm the opposite. I love it, can't get enough of it - I don't care if it's raining or not it still puts a smile on my face.

If you're still on a tiddler, perhaps that's the problem.

I still enjoy commuting too. Even through winter. If you have good gear, you can stay warm and dry regardless. You just have to ride to the conditions, just as you would in the summer.

Two winters of proper commuting (I used to live a mile from the office Crying or Very sad) has pretty much knocked the spirit of adventure out of me.

Riding in stop-go traffic is a chore and the worst way of getting to work, except for every other possible way.

On balance, I still enjoy it, but agree with the sentiment that it takes the shine off, both weekdays and also at the weekends - it's quite nice to have a break from biking. My Photo Challenge contributions are just odd quirks and remnants now.

All that said, sun's out, I'm on the Enfield today, and there are still grins to be had.

I'll be honest, I'd expect if I had to put up with your winters It'd probably dull my enthusiasm a bit too.

I live at altitude as well, it's typically about 2 degrees cooler than at sea level. Great in the middle of summer, but it very often makes the difference between iced in at home but fine at work.

I'm tempted by the prospect of a three-wheeler invalid scootay next winter.

Oh, back on topic, even the cheeky private land bike "parking" in Glasgow is now absolutely rammed solid, with bikes properly boxed in. So if some more bikey-bike-bikers wanted to take the car, bus or train, that would be just fine with me.
