Inspired by a thread on PH, what design details on motorbikes grate with you?

I offer the mirrors on the 2011-2015 ZX10R. They sit too low, on weird mounts and look like they're made out of plastic from Matalan. You've just sent over 10k on a new bike, and they think it's acceptable?

And the weird duck bill on the front of the current S1000RR, tell me the designer didn't just sneeze whilst doing that bit.

Just remembered the "hidden" radiator on the new Bonneville, and the Reg/Rec as a styling piece beneath the headlight. Tuck it out of the way!

No radiators here. Shifty

Standard mirrors on street triple R will be the first thing I remove once I have one of those. Ugly as sin, and useless too.

Clutch cable routing on the 2001 CBR600F. Who signed that off, right across the speedo.

I think I might need a lie down.

The thing I don't like most on many a modern bike is all the little plastic covers bolted on here, there and everywhere, with no attempt to make them flow into one another, or hide their cheapness.

Yeah too insectoid. Its like they're all going for the same manga-esque look instead of retaining the distinctive looks which used to set them apart from one another.

Every "big bike" that is not designed with security in mind. Out of the countless models I've looked at while window shopping I've lost count of how many I've looked at that have little to no obvious ways of being changed through the frame to an unmoveable object, I can see clearly why so many get stolen as commuters, the design flaw may work for you're average weekend rider who leaves it outside the pub and not out of sight but isn't suitable for leaving for hours on end out of sight and view of cameras.

That being said I do very much applaud the sports bike that have a gap in the swingarm to put a chain through.

I have two gripes about my bike, both involve key hole locations being awkward.
I know the seat lock is awkward for a reason but the ignition location is a bugger if your bunch consists of an alarm fob and padlock keys.

When manufacturers dick around with horn/indicator positions or methods just to be Special. I'm looking at you BMW and now Honda.

Stereo/computer controls on the Triumph Trophy.

https://www.motorcycle.com/images/content/Review/2013-Triumph-Trophy-Left-Handlebar-Switches-0622.jpg

You can't operate it without taking your hands off the bars. You need to have a memory like Einstein and a degree in rocket science to understand it. FFS Triumph, when you are blatantly copying BMW, steal the clever bits and dump the poor, not vice versa.

It's part of my job to ensure concepts can be built. Designers may be my nemesis and many engineers are on the special bus when it comes to thinking out of the box but buyers are the destroyers of originality. Cost drives everything.

I dont mind the mirrors on the triple, but the underseat key lock is a pain, as is nowhere to chain through the frame, the stupid unshielded radiator, the horn sticking out the left side, the way the geometry ensures ANY moisture ends up all up your back....

Aprilia went through a phase of this too. (Swapping the horn and indicator buttons over for no obvious reason).

Actually every bike built since 1970 (whenever it was) annoys me... having neutral between 1st and 2nd gear. Why? I've yet to ride a classic bike, but N-1-2-3-4 etc. sounds a lot more sensible, as you normally have the clutch in when downshifting to first anyway.

Having neutral in a position where you can get it on an up or downshift, normally when you're racing someone away from the lights, or taking a tight corner is really annoying. Obviously some bikes are better than others but overall it's the one thing I would change about bikes.

I love original design, as long as it works or looks good. Who designs to make a reg/rec a "feature" of the bike, or sign off a clutch cable routing across the speedo?!

Step forward this farbon cover on ONE SIDE ONLY of the 2013 on CBR600RR. It's properly cheap too, I can only assume the designer must have been on holiday and it desperately needed to be finished.

The entire Cx500 design. Honda had a chance to build a cool water cooled guzzi but they made that instead

It was only slightly redeemed by the 650 turbo with eurostyling

It's a shout out to the Zenner Diodes of the older bikes.

TBH it's great place for it, what to all the bikes that go through reg/recs have in common? They are out of airflow.

They should make them look more like the originals though, I think they are pretty cool looking.

That would be my personal hell, especially in town. Every set of traffic lights, tapping the gear lever repeatedly into neutral and then first especially when trying to do it quick whilst filtering. At least with the current system you can spam the lever into first and be guaranteed to get a gear then you can just shoot away

Agreed, Id far rather have first easy to find and neutral take a bit of messing than the other way around!

Finding neutral by accident only ever happens to me going down the box when Im bimbling and dont give it enough of a kick but all bikes are different!
