I know it's in the wrong section but it'll get the biggest hit here
I have a friend coming over to the UK for a year (as part of a 5 year world bike tour). Where are your best or must see places to bike in the UK? I'd love to give him some suggestions ____________________ CBR600 F3 FV

Crawley town centre.
If then he points in any direction and thenceforth travels thither, the sights shall only improve.

As much as I love the look of the roads up north, I can travel 1/10th the miles the other way and be in Europeland with better roads and likely less wet.
The pics look awesome, the aerial photos are fap worthy, but tis fucking cold and wet up there |

Agreed. I grew up in Oban, then lived in Glasgow and Travelled back and forth and now Im near Aberdeen and back and forth accross the middle as well as up and down to England and the central belt and I'm about to go and do the North Coast 500 - but that's because it's on my doorstep.
I've done the alps and big chunks of Europe twice now (car rather than bike) and love it, but from here, the first 20 hours driving, 1200 miles and £350 is just getting to Calais.
If I lived in the SE, and the continent was on my doorstep, I'd far rather spend the 20 hours heading for the alps than sat on UK motorways to try and get north of Glasgow personally, in spite of how good the scenery is. That said, if I lived in the SE I'd also have lost my mind a long time ago! |

Snowdonia/Gwynedd/Anglesey, but I might be biased No seriously, there are some epic (famous) roads up here, even more so if you ask a local.
I'd definately be up in Scotland too, Applecross pass anyone? ____________________ I want your clothes, your boots and your motorcycle.

Can you? Where? Almost all of Northern France is dull. All of Holland is dull. Most of Belgium is dull. It may be less congested than SE England, but there's not much more to its merit.
IME mainland Europe only starts getting interesting when you get near (and South of) Luxembourg (250 miles from Calais), and it only gets as good as Scotland when you get near the Alps (500 miles from Calais), or Pyrenees (800 miles).
So, Yorkshire/Wales is probably a similar travel distance for you as Luxemberg, and the Highlands is probably a similar travel distance as the Alps.
Scotland in particular is an absolute must-do at least once. It's remote, it's spectacular and many of the roads are phenomenal for riding. Personally, I'd rather ride on Highlands roads than tackle the endless hairpins on most Alpine passes. Those roads look great, but they can be a PITA to ride. The Highlands are also generally less congested than the Alps. Having said that, I'll take either, any time!

I've probably done 20-25 trips around the Dales and the Lakes since March, and I haven't had to ride at all in the rain or on wet roads. In terms of holidays, I've actually had better luck with the weather in Scotland than I have in Europe!
Of course it's wetter and a bit colder here than it is in the SE, and Scotland is generally wetter and colder still. But it's not that bad. You get periods with lots of rain, and periods with not much.

I've got a soft spot for Norfolk.
It's got a fairly unique (to the UK) landscape and some interesting sites.
Roads aren't "epic", but I enjoyed it more than Devon/Cornwall
Summers evening around Thetford. Reasonable visibility and great roads.
Wales and Scotland beat it though for great roads and scenery. |
