Hey Guys,

I'm after a sidecar outfit. Most of these Russian/Ukrainian bikes have right hand fitted side cars but also have MOTs/V5 etc.

The law in regards to this seems to be that if the vehicle was first registered before 1981 the sidecar can be on any side.

Does this registration apply to it's country of origin or once registered in the UK? Seems to be a bit of a minefield...

Any info on Ural/Dnepr sidecars (or if you have one for sale?) would also be great!

Thanks for reading!

My dad has a well fettled Ural (Japanese front end, disc brake, carb upgrade, blah blah) which I think he wants to sell. Would you like me to get some more info?

No chair though, I don't think. That got sold with the other one.

Also if you want a 2wd with the chair driven, it has to be RHS.

Edit. Isn't the loophole if the chair is on the right its registered as a trike, not an outfit? Might have made that up.

Sadly I would rather get one with a chair as finding chairs separately isn't that easy either Sad Thanks anyway though!

I've seen rumors of this "registering as a trike" but thought it was possibly BS...

EDIT - didn't know 2WD only works on the RHS version, thanks! Makes sense why LHS cars are so rare as must be conversions maybe.

Another thatcher anti motorcycle law against a non existent problem !

There were never a problem. The eu has let in plastic tanks , quad bikes
against the (stupid) UK laws, I'd bet that you can register right hand sidecars,
its anti eu .....you see lots of adverts , and the design didn't change much,
get it registered as pre 1960 , no mot , no road tax.....exempt

New fit / new reg sidecars must be on the Left

As usual if registered before law change 1989 ? OK to continue use but I think if sidecar is removed must be refitted on left

The law applies to the date of registration in the UK, not the vehicles date of manufacture. The law is clear.

Pulled from construction and use regs 1986.

"No person shall use or cause or permit to be used on a road any two-wheeled motor cycle registered on or after 1st August 1981, not being a motor cycle brought temporarily into Great Britain by a person resident abroad, if there is a sidecar attached to the right (or off) side of the motor cycle."

This will result in being unable to obtain an MOT as a motorcycle and sidecar is not a trike by the legal definition. Could also be a grey area should one try and insure it.
