Ok so im driving along in my heap of turd 2002 fiesta, my battery light comes on, from past experience on my mazda 6 this means the alternator isnt doing its job. A day later i drive to morisons, nip in, come back to the car and BAM, batterys flat as a fart. All so far is perfectly normal, so i get our lass to push as i bump start the car in front of a few amused shoppers. Anyway, car starts, battery light didnt come back on, drove for half an hour, parked car on a hill. Turn ignition off, restart and the car starts fine. So.. the bump start has seemed to "fix it". Any ideas as to what this could be?

When one of my old bikes was having intermittent charging issues I hooked up a voltage meter to see what the bike was doing whilst I was riding it.

Turned out that the reg/rec was dying and sometimes it was putting out the correct voltage, and sometimes it was putting out like 8v. I replaced the reg/rec and no problems after that.

I think most modern cars include the reg/rec within the alternator housing, so not really as simple to swap, but could be a sign it's on its way out?

I had a new 2001 fiesta and the battery charging fault in the first year of ownership was caused by a broken earth strap.

Your alternator is nearly out of brushes. If you are so inclined you can remove the alt and rear brush it. I think your ecu controls the alternator.
It contains no regulator of its own
