I'm off to Waterford, Ireland, for the weekend and flying out of Luton Airport. As usual with these cheap-flight deals, we end up paying a fortune to get to the airport (£30+ each way on a minicab or similar ££ for long-term car parking), nullifying any savings. I see that Luton has free parking for bikes. Has anyone tried this? Am I just asking for my bike to be stolen?

At Heathrow, the bike parking actually looks decent (covered, right next to the terminal building and CCTV'd), but I don't know what the situation is at Luton.

You can get the train as CaNsa said and then use the free bus shuttle, or take the coach.

Airports are generally decent IME, Manchester is covered with CCTV and decent ground anchors, and as mnentioned heathrow is halfway decent.

I'd happily (and have) left mine at manchester without worrying about it.

From my home, the train is four changes, 2.5 hours and £20 each way (per person). Most of the time, it doesn't run when you need to get to the airport to catch the dawn flight, but in this case, we could make it.

So, if I were going by myself, it would be cheaper (just) but cost in other ways. Since my wife and I are going, the train is actually the most expensive way to get to Luton.

And therein lies the problem with the national rail system...

Parking at Luton airport for bikes is just a line of bikes in the medium stay car park (from memory). There's no cover or anything for the bikes, just a reasonable amount of bikes to hope you can do chain to chain with.

With it being Luton too I wouldn't be too happy on leaving my bike there. Hell, I wouldn't leave my car there and it's much less steal-able and significantly less valuable.
