Hi,
I passed my tests 8 months ago and after careful consideration decided to buy a "maxi-scooter" as my first bike. Suzuki Burgman 650 Exec. I thought it would be practical, easy to manoeuvre, and fun since it is a 650cc. I use it for a short daily commute through London streets. I took it for a few short motorway trips, and it handles the speed superbly. I managed to get up to 90mph and it still had a lot of power, however....
I realised I am not using it for the occasional quick run to the shop to buy a bottle of milk as I thought, so doesn't matter that it has a big storage and it is practical; also, it is not that easy to manoeuvre (it is still a 650cc bike, and a very long and wide one, it does not fit through my garden gate); and it is not that much fun either because... well, it is a scooter.
Now, my dilemma. On my commute I wear almost all my protective clothing, except my trousers, as it is a lot easier to get changed once I arrive in the office(Stupid, I know). The bike offers sufficient wind protection and I only ride for a short time at slow speed. For longer trips I wear full protection.
I would like to upgrade to a bike with full fairing, so that there would still be some protection and my trousers would not burn or get dirty on contact with engine. I keep the bike and car clean, but I guess it happens.
Last, but not least, I am quite tall (~1.9m / 6ft2in) and concerned about looks. Not impressed when I see myself on the scooter in a shop window.
Now, could anyone suggest a bike I could buy up to 5years old, over 650cc, under£5k for my short daily commute and an occasional trip to the seaside?
Thanks,
Michael

I wouldn't bother with a full fairing bike, look at an MT07 or a Street Triple, they would suit you much better. Commuting on a Supersport gets tiresome.

From what?

Non sequitur. Engines don't spew oil Royal Enfields excepted so this is not an issue.

You won't find a geared bike that offers anywhere the weather protection of your Burgman.

So hello, welcome to BCF, and let's start over.

What exactly do you want from a bike? Talk in terms of requirements, not solutions.

For a short daily commute in London you want a small nimble scooter and wear no more than jacket, gloves and boots with some ankle protection.

Smaller scooter means more nimble, less work to get in and out, and you don't need loads of power - getting up to 30/40 is brisk enough. No gears means no wear or oil on the top of your left boot.

Any more dressing up and the faff of it negates the practicality. You'll never be popping down to the shops for milk if you need to put on a whole outfit.

IMO you're not actually interested in bikes, you want one as a fashion accessory, and that's down to your taste. Why not go buy the prettiest one you can afford? Perhaps bring along a friend with a camera so you can judge how you look?

I am bored.

As someone else mentioned, I am looking to turn heads now more than practicality...

Protection? Basically, during my 5 days DAS course the inside of my trousers leg got burnt from the engine heat. I thought the plastics would offer protection against this king of incidents.

I do not have any biking experience or friends bikers to talk to.

You need a GSXR1000 or an R1. Thumbs Up

Get a Fazer, cheap and it'll do everything you want. No amount of fairings will make the slightest difference at London commuting speeds, and I'm guessing you won't be trundling off to Southend in the pouring rain?
As to appearance? No-one other than you will give a damn, so why worry?

I am actually considering buying a GSXR1000, but the ad sais "lowered seat" and due to my hight I thought it is not for me. I found somewhere on the internet that the seat is actually adjustable, but I am not sure and did not contact the seller yet. Thanks for the suggestions

Fazer was the bike I always wanted (due to looks), but never found one in a shop nearby to test. I sat on one in a garage about 5 years ago. Not enough to make my mind up (I feel uncomfortable to go to test ride bikes from private sellers). When I see a bike/car I buy it.

I do not ride in bad weather. Wink

Why worry? I am old enough not to worry and I thought I wouldn't when I decided to go for the Burgman, but apparently I am not wise enough... I still need to show off a little.

Is this a requirement, or just for man points? My 600 is (theoretically) good for about 150mph and (25 years ago) produces 100bhp.
My ER6, which was a 650cc, had an unrestricted output of around 85bhp.

For comparison, the Burgman 650 is 54bhp and has a top speed of 110mph.

Since the Burgman is 650cc, "upgrading" to something more powerfull I automatically thought "a bigger engine". Now I realise the "cc" is not the main thing to look at.

If I was commuting in London I'd consider an XT660X

Versys 650
V Strom 650 or 1000?
BMW F800GS
Kawa ER6f (I trained on Kawasaki ER6n and Yamaha XJ and I thought I was too big for them, but I paid more attention to learning that to being confortable and enjoying myself)
Honda NC750, NC700
Fazer

As you can see I have only considered one style of bikes because of my hight, but I am sure there must be some sports bike to fit me.

If you're a bigger chap, go for the versys over the ER6. Same engine, but higher saddle and more equipment.
Failing that, fazer is a pretty good all rounder.
NC700/750 is built for fuel economy and I've heard some absolutely woeful reviews about ride enjoyment. Pretty sure they're built to produce exactly 47bhp/35kW for A2 riders.

You're worrying far too much about your height. You're not freakishly tall so go and sit on some bikes and get some test rides.

Buy whichever bike you find comfiest and like the most. Or you could buy whichever bike you think you'll like the reflection of in shop windows the most.

Yeah, yeah/yeah, yeah, yeah, meh and... yeah. Also, Hornet or Bandit.

If you want a biggish faired bike but not necessarily a leany-forwards sportsbike, the Suzuki GSX650F might suit: it's a Bandit in a pretty frock, which is no bad thing.

You can't really go far wrong with pretty much any European or Japanese branded 600+ twin, triple or IL4 bike made in the past 15 years, to be honest, it's just a case of finding one that you like.

It's very subjective. I just tried a Fazer today, and I can see why some riders would absolutely love it. I found it a bit revvy for my tastes though, but it's good to have a nibble.

Ok. Thanks everyone guys for your input. I will try finding some shops open this bank holiday weekend and sit on a few bikes. Otherwise, I guess it wasn't a bad decision buying the Burgman for my needs, everything else is just me being a drama queen and looking for a change.
It was my first time posting on a forum (I guess it was noticeable) and did not expect so many replies. Thanks again to everyone. Take care!

I take it that you don't go out in inclement weather?

Full Fairing isnt very specific though. An R1 is fully faired, but gash in shit weather. Presumably OP wants a Pan, or maybe a deauville. or since its for posing, maybe a K1600

"Funny".

As noted, you can buy a faired bike that does a great job of directing all of the weather straight onto you.

The question was intended to tease out from OP whether he wanted weather protection like the Burgman, or racebike looks because bitches be creaming.
