I was chatting to my younger cousin today - he's 15. He asked how old he'd have to be to ride a "big bike". I didn't know the answer
Assuming someone wanted to start riding as soon as they could, while moving up to something bigger as soon as possible, what's the quickest way it can be done if you're young? I did a quick search and it looks like this is the fastest possible way:
50cc (AM) at 16
125cc (A1) at 17
A2 at 19
Full unrestricted "A" licence at 21
Is that right? |

Yep you're right in your initial thought - https://www.gov.uk/ride-motorcycle-moped/overview
Who conjured up the ridiculous rules anyway?
You're a legal adult at 18 and can vote, drink, go to war... but Mother knows best and youre not allowed a (proper) bike until you're 24! What mong thought that up and why are they allowed to do that? |

True, but you have to get licensed up at some point and start your probationary period, whether it's AM, A1, or car. Then if you've carried over even one[*] offence, any more is a revocation.
Riding around on a provisionaL actually hands Dibble extra opportunities to stitch you up with Otherwise Than In Accordance, so really, why wait?
[*] OK, technically, you can get 2 points for "Play street offences", but in practice everything else gets you at least 3 per offence. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

But you could amass more points on your provisional. If you passed, got 6 points, lost your license, took your test(s) again, got a further 6 points you'd be banned.
I'm not actually sure provisional licenses have a limit, I've heard it's 12 points but the instructor who taught me to drive said he had a student with 19 points, who after passing was in the same situation as those with any points (any further and he'd lose his license). |

There's no limit on the provisional, apart from the practical consideration of insurance. So if you're planning to rack up a birrion point, sure, stay on L plates as long as possible.
Or don't bother with the pLates, it's only more points. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Those EU morons in Brussels, that are answerable to nobody.
They love telling us how we need to be spoonfed.
I'd vote tomorrow for a leader that would abolish the helmet laws in the UK (but obviously wear one, I'm not a fucking retard). |
Yes, that's exactly what happened there.
In CZE, there used to be only one motorcycle licence, that you could obtain at 17. Then, long before the EU we changed to law to have Am, A1, A2, A licence. Your gov did the same or would have done, even if you never joined the EU.
EDIT: Once you are gone, who are you gonna blame then? You burning your toast and blaming the EU for making your bread more flammable, will be no more. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

Like it or not, they are EU regs and replaced our existing regs (which were quite bad also).
Are you saying that it's not good to blame the people responsible?
Anyhow, we are a sovereign state, my grandfather would be furious that we are handing so much power to the mainland, after he fought in a war to stop it, losing 2 of his brothers and many of his friends.
I know progress should be made, but at what cost? We have little to gain from being in the EU now, the doomsayers all predict losses that would be short term, transitional change losses. We have lost control of our borders and net immigration is rising year on year, even though problems existed 10 years ago with our infrastructure being unable to cope. It is now at breaking point and so we have come to this referendum by force, not choice.
Do you think any of us voting to exit even gave a thought about our EU membership 10 years ago? Of course not, because it never affected our lives enough to care. Now we cannot get our children into schools, our hospitals are having to CLOSE A&E services due to not being able to cope, our low paid workers are now struggling to get into low paid jobs, which means there are now school leavers that have little to no chance of securing even a crappy job, our housing situation is now a joke, there are more people entering the UK than there are houses to home them.
Fuck EU, it didn't work out.
Thanks for the memories, we wont be back x |

The UK's implementation of the 3DLD was done at the last moment, long after we were required to publish it. The EU were actually investigating the delay, after... someone... ratted Westsminster out.
In practical terms, the EU and UK would recognise each others' separate licences anyway for short term use like they do with many other countries. But right now, we don't recognise them as being a single licence despite that being the intent.

Well, well, it's almost as though we don't (by and large) trust Jeanny Fritzio to not just hand out licences like sweeties. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

The people responsible, you say. Alright.
I am not going to respond on that, nor the history note, as this is not a thread about politics and as I was saying earlier, I'm done with that.

So we're clear, the old system with an automagically upgrading 25kW license was also dictated by the EU. I don't think there was much wrong with it. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

It's not that I dont agree with certain things that the EU have done, I'm not a complete bigot, it's just that I don't like the undemocratic way that that do it. Of course we vote in our EU reps, but we need to have more control over what we can and cant do, having the EU have the final say on our borders and legal system is downright obscene. The UK law system is a benchmark for virtually every civilised legal system in the world. We know how to do things right, so we should never have relinquished powers to the EU.
Anyhow, I see no problem with reverting back to 125 until you are 19, and then a full licence with a 25kw limit for two years after a practical test (theory too if you are not a full licence holder of another main category).
I would do away with the 50cc limit for 16 year olds too, thinking about it, those things are more dangerous than anything I've ever had to ride in my life. Worst case scenario, you have to wait until you are 17 before riding, if nobody goes for the 125cc at 16 idea. 50cc bikes are horrific, we all know this. Forcing kids onto them is equally horrific. |
