my flatmate said 'my bike has been handling funny for a week now can you have a look'.

he uses it every day and rides in a rapid manner.....

It actually took me a minute to realise what I was even seeing, how could anyone ride a bike for a week with that and not be deaded?
Even BodgyGuard isn't that lucky. Shocked

Is the shock completely disconnected from the swing arm mounting point?

Wouldn't that make the bike literally impossible to ride? i.e. the rear subframe would just collapse and rest on the rear wheel. Evidently it has not, so what's going on?

Well either the body of the bike is jacked up for that picture, or the swinging arm isn't swinging and he's been riding a seized up hard-tail.

Or is it that the remains of the shock and bottom mount at coming together at just the right angle to barely stop it bottoming out?

Moar details, that's pretty amazing.

I did consider a seized swingarm pivot, but then I can't imagine it not unseizing with a grown man sat on the bike!

Maybe the sump / exhausts are dragging along the ground and holding it all up? Neutral

Or the obvious answer is that he hasn't been riding the bike like that, and as you say, it's being held in place for the photo.

sorry just to clarify I am holding the rear of the bike up in the photo.

when left to sit under its own weight the snapped mounting was resting on top of the swing arm slightly in front and below the original mounting position.

I promise its not mine I would genuinely own up if it was Laughing

quite correct I am amazed it didn't end in disaster. if you pick the bike up and move the shock it is possible for the shock to sit on the tyre and if you swing it forward you can get it through the swingarm and that results in the bike sitting on the tire.

he doesn't drive a car and has only been riding 2 years (1st year cbt then test) at 32 years old. he has little mechanical sympathy and knowledge.

he recognised 'something' was not right and was describing what I believed to be rear end chatter under braking.

he has bought a used ( Rolling Eyes ) shocker of ebay for it which I no doubt will be fitting for him this week.

what other horrors will I find? I will let you all know Laughing
