CBR125 - Cuts off when putting into gear

Last night, on my way home in the pouring rain, went past a bus stop with 2 bikes in there.

I thought I would do my good deed for the day, so I turned around and stopped, even though I don't have much experience, or any tools on me.

A 65 plate 125CBR was the one with the problem, the classic Yamaha 125 was running fine!

It started but cut out soon as you put it into gear. And wasn't starting with the bike in 1st gear with stand up or down.
He had been riding in the rain fine, then all of a sudden kept cutting out.

The lad was adamant it was the kick stand switch with the problem, and after about half hour of me being there, after me going to get a lighter from a shop to burn the insulation off the wires by kick stand and join them together, it still didn't work.

In the end they decided they would be walking the bike home!

I wished them well, and then made my way home.

Anyone have any ideas what it could be?
We tried revving whilst putting into gear, still stalled. Tried engaging second gear, and he tried to bump start it to no avail.

I don't have any contact details for them to help, but as the bike was still in warranty he was taking it back to Honda anyways.
Just want some knowledge if I ever come along this problem again, or am stuck myself somewhere.

It'll be the switch. Have you tried without connecting the wires... simply cutting them or removing the switch.

Kickstand wiring further up the loom is a possibility.

was the actual button bit for the stand switch moving in and out freely?

Mine gets gunked up every so often and i have to physically pull it out in order to stop the bike cutting out when i stick it in 1st.
