Granddaughter passed her car test today, she is 24 (and no, I will not be posting pictures). What are the cheapest cars to insure, Ford Ka, Clio etc?

Tell her to get one of those "black boxes". Young lad (17) at work just passed his test reduced his quote from £8000 to £1700 when he had one fitted. That's a BMW 1 series as well. Not always the case the cheaper shitty cars are the cheapest to insure.

I'd look for something that isn't the typical 1.0 or 1.1 first car because the insurance will quite likely be cheaper on a 1.4 boring saloon than it is for a 1 litre Fiesta due to how much Fiesta drivers cost insurance companies compared to how much drivers of 1.4 saloons do.

Just think long and hard if you do...
If they are the type that tracks your driving style and you get a bit OTT with the driving. They will cancel the policy....
That then has to be declared going forward.....

So black boxes, while if you are a good little boy/girl can save money. If you are not (or allow someone else to drive) they can end up costing you far more than you save.....

Daughter 24 1.2 Kia Picanto (new) £670 (me as additional driver)

A colleague at work is 22 and just passed his test, he spent a long time working out insurance, running costs, fuel costs and purchase cost all combined taking about a month over it.

He bought a new shape KA from a car supermarket.

There doesn't seem to be any firm rules when it comes to insurance. For example, I've been playing around with insurance quotes in and out of London (bare with me on this Smile):

Ecoboost 1.0L Fiesta - £1000 in London with a black box, £1400 without
- £700-£800 outside of London (no black box)

Mazda MX-5 1.8L - £2500 in London, £620 outside (neither with a BB)

So basically if you live in an undesirable area some cars will cost you considerably more, if you live in a nice area you will probably have more choice/less eye-watering quotes.

Also some 'cheaper' cars are actually more than you think to insure, a Corsa 1.2 Diesel costs the same as a Clio 182 2.0L. Volvo C30 seems unsually cheap to insure, taking the above into consideration.

Black box is a not an option IMHO as her post code dictates she should be a naughty girl and insure at a different post code. Inner City Birmingham is the worst place in the country to insure.

Insurance is a joke, I just did a comparison website with details of a person of her status in her area. The types of insurance are Fully Comp (this gives you most cover) TPF&T, and at the bottom for cover Third Party Only. Cheapest quote was Fully Comp at £1770 and the most expensive was £11615 also FC. This is for an old Ford Ka.

Go for cars outside of the usual learner suspects (as well as the boy racer / hot hatch crew), I.e. my skoda octavia 1.9, old man reputation amongst insurance Co.s (avoid VRS ofc).

What may also help most unusually is sticking a provisional learner friend of hers on her policy as a named driver, oddly my parents at 60 each with 40 years driving experience put my premium up by £300 over what it cost to insure myself but adding my over half's 21 year old mate who only has a provisional put it down by £200 Confused (note this was adding them as named drivers underneath myself as main, other way round would count as that bs insurance term 'fronting').

That's not bad, when I passed (at 24 also) I was getting quotes of close to 3 grand.

Just shows what a minefield insurance's. Adding an experienced driver brings down prices for myself (by about £500 on a large quote), and a friend of mine added 4 people to his policy Very Happy

Black boxes have a bad reputation and I'm not sure why, I've had one for nearly 3 years (since 18) on my 1L lupo and I don't change my driving style because of it, I still get rated as a 'good' driver even though I drive at night, occasionally speed, take corners like a lunatic and brake suddenly.

Granted, it is only a 1L and by no means quick but I've never heard of someone losing their insurance over it. I also have it insured at my parents house which is over 100 miles away and they've not questioned me on it.

If she's into old cars ( probably isnt ) you could look at classic car insurance. I've manage to insure a 1986 200 TDI landy 90 for £1300 without a box

What the 'Crash for Prakash' capital of the UK?? What a surprise?
I can't imagine it's near the top of many peoples list of places they'd want to live either.

New shape Fiat 500 are a good bet. Loads about. Wear their miles well, plenty parts, low or zero RFL. Many MPGs. Very girly.
(I Wouldn't bother with the diesel, extra noise and weight aren't worth the minor mpg saving over the petrol)
1.2 or 1.4 petrol being favourite, although the 900cc twinair reviews well I can't say I've driven one of those.
All Ncap 5 star rated, 7 airbags as standard. So can also withstand being 'caught' between two apparently
unrelated Nissans (who when the claim settles were miraculously each driven by 'cousins' who corroborate each
others bogus story fully and additionally despite you not seeing any at the time by the time you hear from insurance,
each car was now chock full of people who

a. have serious neck injuries (Does having a brass one count????) and want monies.

and

b. Can never work again (if they ever did) due to those injuries and still want monies.

There's a lot of it about. Apparently..

They are also fun to drive, great little town cars. Our 1.2 is fine on the motorway but could do with slightly more guts if
I'm being highly critical. But a N/A 1.2 engine has it's limits I suppose. Ours can just claw its way into triple figures but prefers
to cruise at about 85 (displayed). Our insurance on ours is something daft like 200 quid a year full comp but we are both older
43/33 and live somewhere that is the complete opposite of Birmingham, which probably helps a lot with that.

Have you ever got any money back from your policy? I think it depends on the system, the black boxes in our fleet vehicles at work are so sensitive you can easily trigger them with normal driving, even taking a tight roundabout at normal speeds can be seen as extreme cornering by the system. Also insuring at a good address probably saves a lot more money than the black box Very Happy

She needs to buy the newest car she can afford and put parents on as named drivers, this will lower it a bit. Black box will lower it more.

I've not had any money back from them, but I don't think they offer money back anyway. I did however get a significant reduction in my renewal from £800 the first year to £430 the second year, I'm not sure if this is down to having 1 years no claims or my 'good driving'.

I'm not convinced the box actually works as it occasionally says I've driven the car on days that I haven't. I can't complain though really as my insurance is cheap as chips for people my age.

I'm going to be getting a 170bhp Seat Leon Cupra in the coming months, so I'll see how I get on having a black box in that Twisted Evil

Run many quotes for many different sorts of car. Avoid local demographic traps - if the area has a lot of people crashing for cash in Japanese hatchbacks, expect the price to be higher.

It is important to check out the insurance on cars that may seem wildly unwise for new drivers. I used to insure a Jag for less than a metro. Billy, also from around my way, was uninsurable on anything but an MX-5 (because obvious homosexual). Always worth running a quote on a land rover too, they can be oddly cheap sometimes.

Or just accept that it's going to cost silly money and get a focus so all of the other costs are manageable. Or work out how much it is all going to cost over a year and decide taxis are cheaper.

Not always.
Daughter was quoted £1500 for having a blackbox, yet we got £670 with the same details without.
Difference using Aviva instead of one of the co's who use blackboxes who tend to attract the more accident prone drivers.

So as other's have said think outside the box and try some of the companies that do not appear on the compare sites Thumbs Up

Whatever you do don't let her buy a fucking Ford KA.

Buy a fiesta instead.

I've always found my 1.2 polo young driver friendly (and it's needed nothing in the 5 years we've had it apart from 2 tyres and a battery)

54 plate, it's been a great little car.

Cousin spent £3500 on a Ford KA - it got scrapped after spending £1000's on it, because my cousin went through a puddle I think. It had 30k on it - had to have a clutch.

We spent £1000 more - 5 years ago and the polo is still going strong.... you get the point.... and I thrashed the fuck out of it for a year. Literally redlined it every gear change. Still runs very well with 80k on it - bought it at 55k ish.

The cheapest way to do it is to do what I did. Buy an old, early 2000's hatchback of 1.6l or smaller for approximately £1000. Insure it TP only with a very low annual mileage of say 3,500 on a non-black box policy. Don't crash and don't get points. Then a year later buy a car she actually wants to drive and insure it fully comp with a years no claims.
I'm afraid you just have to take the hit on the first year, but the quotes do drop rapidly after that. For example, my TP quote in the first year for an '04 1.2L corsa was £1800. My quote the year after for a car worth 6 times as much and with twice the power, fully comp and a mileage allowance of 10,000 was about £500. Quotes for next year seem about £400 or so.
