I bought some piston rings for a Lister engine but I have accidentally ordered "SIZE +020"

Can I still use these or are they going to be too big?

I believe it is a 3.5" bore. No idea what piston but I assume standard size.

If you have a +.020 piston then ok. If you don't then not ok.

You can check them for fit by sliding one square into the working part of the bore and checking the end gap with a feeler gauge. The end gap tolerance will be in a manual somewhere.

Obviously, if you can't slide it into the bore because they are too big, they are too big.

Your Lister engine? Petrol/diesel?

What's it used for?

None of the above makes any difference to your piston rings I'm just being a nosy cunt!

Lister SR2 air cooled twin cylinder diesel. Used in a narrow boat. So when it is used, it is used hard for long hours. I don't use it for anything other than propulsion.

I haven't taken the top end off yet so I don't know whether anything is non standard size wise. I was just wondering if it was a standard piston and standard bore, if I could get away with these larger rings.

Can't find anything specific to diesels but the general consensus seems to be no they can't.

Shame because these were half the price of the standard size ones. I thought I was getting a bargain!

You really have no choice but to take it apart and see what you have. Remember this engine was built from 1967 - 1976 so at that age may well have been apart a couple of times already.

Like you said in PM, bite the bullet, pull the head and barrels off and see what you find. Also you will be able to see if the design allows you to put the barrels back on with the pistons attached.

Oh and leaving the boat for a while? Leave a manual charger off the marina 240v supply attached to the batteries and make sure your bilge pump is on auto.

Gapping rings is normal. +0.020" is 0.5mm over so the circumference should be 1.58mm over-length. I would do as Stinky say, push them up the bore and observe the overlap on the ends, then file them down until you have a measurable gap, then file the gap to suit. Odds-on your bore is worn slightly large anyway.

Internet says 4 thou gap per inch of bore so I would aim for 14thou gap, maybe a thou or two less to allow for bedding-in. Use a very fine file and make sure you file them dead square. Actually I think Lidl had diamond warding files in this week for about a fiver, they might do it.

Might be useful if you haven't already got this info

The Lister part number 570-10940 is for Lister SR piston assembly, for over sizes the part number ends in /020 etc. ie. 570-10940/020

As I am going to be out of the country for a few months, I am going to leave this piston ring change till I get back. I don't want to leave the engine in bits as I will lose them and forget where everything goes.

Cheers for the help fellas. Thumbs Up Karma

I have a couple of chargers, one trickle charger one slightly larger. Neither of them ever says they are fully charged. They just keep the voltage up around 13.8V for days on end. So much so that I have had to top up the batteries with water.

Do you have leakage problems? If not a couple of leisure batteries will be fine to run your bilge pump as required without a charger.

+1 on Size in the bore and file one end to suit the gap.

Cast iron so you can file them with your wee sister's nail file.

Do you know anywhere that sells the rings cheap? Best I can find is eBay for £27 per cylinder.

This lot seem to have every spare under the sun if their stock lists can be believed. I dread to think what their prices will be like though.
