Tempted to pick up this socket set from Halfords the weekend

https://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductMobileDisplay?catalogId=10151&storeId=10001&productId=1001919&langId=-1&categoryId=255215

Someone I use to work with had that kit and to be honest seems good value for money, the quality was quite good as well,
I am interested in the different 3/8 bits for my torque wrench,
I am also sure the rest will get used, might treat myself,

Anyone else have that kit or similar?

In all honesty you can't really quibble with Halfords socket sets. They're good.

I've got the smaller kit to that and it is a good starter set. You end up buying stuff around it anyway as you go.

Sorted then, I'll treat myself, my birthday in a couple of weeks so that's a good enough excuse, it's a well organised kit,
Nothing worse than starting a job and not having the right size bit to hand

Yet again I'm just going to preach going to carboots on a regular basis to pick up more spanners and sockets than you'll know what to do with and will cost less than half of the Halfords set. To me that set contains far too many un-needed bits and bobs that you'll never need and probably pushes the price up for it also. Only time I go to Halfords is for things I actually need and can't be bothered to shop around for, warrenty makes for additional happy face while buying.

Best way to build your tool kit up is time and buying what you'll need. Tools can get expensive fast so buying cheap where quality can be had (ie; carboots) is always a path I'd take.

Halfords 1/4 6 sided socket sets cost about £25. They also do a set of their (I assume advanced) spanners of most used sizes for around £30-40.. I'd question the shop monkey about warrenty and make sure that they're the same as the individual ones before buying. For 3/8 and above 6 sided you're better of looking around at carboots or Machinemart etc. Probably could buy the ratchets on their own from Halfords.

Just to, again, mention the carboots, picture below was what I got for.. oh I forget, lets just say under £20, I'm sure it was less than that but I forget what thread I posted it in originally. Two "Teng Tools" sockets where the cream of the crop of that haul. Smallest deep socket is a Halfords 6 sided one. Kamasa and others. When the suns out people really do just bring tools by the box load and sell them at throw away prices.

https://s33.postimg.org/m7gbngqqn/cb_t2.jpg

But yeah on the whole to answer your question save your money and buy what you'll need when the jobs arise.

I recently bought a torque wrench and assumed the sockets I already had would fit,
They don't, need a mixture of sockets to service the bike this weekend, Probably only need 2 or 3 sizes to be honest,
I already own a ton of tools and tool boxes,
It's just dotted all over the place,
I am a service engineer so I have tools in the boot of the car, back seat of the car, my tool box in the boot, my tool bag in the boot, some in the garage, some up stairs,
Maybe I just need to be more organised

the set is spot on,
those saying you wont need x or y from it obviously only work on the odd bike,
many a time you need a weird sized torx or a 16mm socket, which you will need there and then to finish a job say,

If you need a socket set and have the cash buy this, its all kept in one place so no rooting around for the spanner you got from the car boot but is now at the back of the garage as its spread all over.

I don't like the Halfords sets which have imperial too - prefer more metric tools. They are ok (but not great) value when they're "half price" or more off - the standard price as with a lot of stuff sold there is massively inflated to account for this.

Personally, I would go for (and have) a draper expert 6 point wall drive set. Not quite as nice finish, but added bonus they are excellent at removing corroded or otherwise rounded fastners.

one thing that set doesn't have iirc (i have the 200 piece one too) is a set of 3/8th six sided sockets. It has the 12 point ones which work fine, but aren't great for rusty bolt heads.

I ended up getting a set from machine mart for a few quid and combined with the halfords set it has done me well.

As I say, you end up adding to the set over time.

The thing that gets me about them is that lack of extension bars in all drive sizes - you have a reducer but not the other way around so if you want to attack a 17mm down 6 inches on a half inch drive you can't. But I have enough old extension bars and the like hanging around from old sets so it's not really too much of an issue.

Before you buy, try and get hold of a halfords trade card, you can probably show them your clubcard/old train ticket/durex as proof of trade (i just pretty much asked for one) and they`ll give you a trade card. gives you an extra 20% of tools i think. (this is even of top of the half price discounts they usually have)

Worth doing
Thumbs Up

I bought that exact set last year. Not used more than a quarter of it, but as mentioned above, there might be a time when I do need something that is there. All handy in one place. Think I bought mine with 50% off too so wasn't THAT expensive.

I went to Halfords yesterday and they were sold out, the 130 price was a bank holiday offer, ended up just buying the sizes I needed, Apparently it's usually priced at 200

Might get it in the future though

The halfords advanced 1/4" socket set goes as low as £15 when offers are good and is most of what is needed. I got one a few weeks ago to upgrade my shit sockets. I think I use a 1/2" 21mm, 22mm and 24mm sockets bought individually and a breaker bar or draper ratchet when not using a socket of the size found in that set.

I have a teng spanner set. Better than my shit spanners, but nowhere near as nice as the few britools I have kicking around. But a 8-19mm set of teng spanners cost as much as one 17mm single-hex britool spanner. I might treat myself to a nice set, or just find nice 10, 12 and 14mm spanners and call it enough.
