Buying a category c write off bike. What do i need to know?

Havent seen this bike in person yet, but in the pictures it looks near mint original condition, so i was quite suprised when i did a hpi check and found it to be a cat c, written off in 2002. The seller makes no mention on the advert of this but assuming its had all the necessary work done it could be a very sound bike for little money

However. The hpi test says Theres no record of a vic test done so im guessing either the owner hasnt informed the dvla of one or hasnt had one done, in which case he probably doesnt have a v5 either

Please fill in any blanks and tell me what i need to know as im a bit in the dark here

No VIC on bikes.

If it looks good, rides good, buy it. Cat C from 14 years ago.

Correct, there's never been a VIC check for bikes, and there's no longer one for cars now after it turned out to be a total farce and only caught 40 or so ringers from nearly a million vehicles tested.

C/D (or now "repairable") is a complete non-issue, except that your insurer will value the bike less by some magical amount in the event of a claim.

Quality "hpi" check that flags up "no VIC" for a motorcycle. Rolling Eyes

I rang the seller and he sounded very suprised and said he had no idea. He said he has the logbook v5 in his name and it doesnt have the cat c on there. So i rang up dvla and they confirmed it and also said vic testing has been abolished, and theres no reason to suggest the bike wasnt made road safe again... Just the no vic status on the check that rang alarms for me

So why wouldnt the cat c be on the v5 i guess is the main question now?

My bikes have never had that on the V5, even after buying back.

just buy it and ride it

its simple as that
theres only 2 things stopping you from buying it

finance outstanding
stolen.

anything else will not stop it from going on the road.

Caveat is that anything that's (now) recorded as a non-repairable write-off (A or B) should have the V5C surrendered and DVLA won't issue a new one.

I can't see that actually creates an offence of riding it if it's roadworthy, but it does mean that you can't buy VED for it.

Saw a guy on eBay selling a cat b who reckoned he persevered and was issued a v5, but then he would say that if he had one Smile Isn't a Cat A normally a burnt out shell anyway?

A bike written off that long ago, and being relatively low value has probably been sold multiple times without a HPI check, so the seller might have genuinely not known. If it looks straight, rides straight, buy it. Just don't pay stupid money, as at some point Paddy, I mean someone bought the wreck for peanuts Wink

Just don't pay silly money for it and it doesn't matter if it's been into a tree if it's been repaired properly.

I just bought it, got a considerable amount off it, the bike is immaculate though and the guy genuinely had no idea. Just ridden it home from wales on the motorway and it didnt miss a beat
