I know it's been done to death, and I've used the search function extensively, but I'm more confused then when I started Laughing

I think I'm sold on a (genuine) SJCAM of some description, after seeing just how useful Matt's was on the Wales trip. The option to take photos at regular intervals is excellent rather than hours of dull footage to sift through.

30FPS / 60FPS / Wifi...etc etc. In the real world, what is really necessary? The ability to take good photos is probably the most important feature. I think Matt's model is the standard SJ4000 (not + or WIFI). The 3 models I've shortlisted so far are the SJ4000, SJ4000+ WIFI, and SJ5000+ WIFI

This has been getting a bit of interest on reddit.

Not sure if there is a UK supplier though.

I have the SJ4000 wifi and is purely for insurance purposes. I am happy with it for that and it has paid itself off many times over as it nailed a hit & run perp from the footage.

Can't help but think I'd want something better for proper, keep forever, rideout footage of holidays etc.

i have the sj4000 and sj4000 wifi..

only difference thats a + and - is the normal can zoom the wifi cant as zoom button turns wifi on.

the wifi version is great for helmets as you can set up where it needs to be pointing with your helmet on.

quality is more than enough, lasts me about 45 minutes before going dead and i have it on 3 minute cycled and screen on for 5 mins, i often push the button to light the screen up when some eejit is sat up my arse.

my normal sj4000 did once fall out the mount...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Fq3CSZgYy8

i went back picked it up, front case had come off and battery cover, new front case for £4 and its fine!

I had a SJCAM M10 (same internals as SJ4000) before my Hero4. I've still got footage which I'll try and upload to YouTube tomorrow morning if you like so you can see the quality. I thought the quality was fantastic, it handled light changing scenarios and direct sunlight very well. Only thing that lets it down is audio capability and it recorded in .mov which for some reason I had a hard time finding a video editor for.

Depending what you want to do with it, footage in 720p 30fps would be OK. No need for 60fps if you just want it as a black box. The more you up the quality and frame rate the more CPU intensive the editing is and the more room it takes on the cameras memory card.

From reviews I'd avoid the SJ5000 as a helmet cam apparently the battery life is crap. If you do go for the 5000 also keep in mind there are multiple variants some with a better image sensor.

I use a standard SJ4000, can't say I've ever felt an urge for the wifi features. It's cheap, mounts are cheap, batteries are cheap and it does an acceptable job.... here's some footage (ensure youtube plays at 1080), youpube gimps the quality a bit but you get an idea of it. https://youtu.be/gU_RPuIxphc?t=1m9s

I've got a Go Pro Hero 3+ Black (which I had when we attempted Hastings that one time).

I got it at trade price, due to working in a bike shop at the time. If I wasn't I probably wouldn't have what I have.

Go Pro has this. It's pretty good. But these days I only video what I know will be worth watching... Which has been Santa Pod and that's about it. Recording legal riding is more boring than doing it!

I find that the ability to turn the camera on and then press record is ample functionality.

Everything else (for me) is a gimmick.

I lie... A couple of settings are useful, but I'm talking the bare essential settings (Quality, Camera orientation)

Hobby King sale the Genuine SJ5000 and SJ4000 rebranded as their own. UK distribution too for a little more.

I don't like the Go Pro format for a lot of things.
However, recently got a Git2 and pretty impressed with it. The digital 'gyro' functionality seems to work very well at smoothing out vibrations.
Some lacklustre riding, but should give you an idea (I catch up and follow another bike for a few laps about half way in, which gives a better idea of quality etc)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACiWfWVYQlI
Does wifi, vehicle camera and a good variety of other stuff. The package I got came with an external remote on a wrist strap (only one way, alas) for a little over £100.
Note that I selected 'vivid' - which is over the top it turns out - the normal setting is better.

This was filmed on an SJ4000 Wifi. Not bike related but shows the quality. if you use the door with the slots then the sound quality is okay.

The blurry line across the screen is because the lens part of the case had a crack in it.
The only downside I find is not being able to plug an external mic in.

How does the wifi work, is it transmitting the image to your phone to act as a viewfinder?

Wifi is only really for setting up/controlling the camera. I don't like the shape of the gopro - it doesn't make sense for most bike things, where the tube-based ones seem to be much more reasonable.

Saying that, if I got the fairings I've got an offer in on which have a cut out for a light on one side, I was wondering about sticking said Git2 on my quadcopter 2 axis Gimball behind there if that was possible.

You can use it as a "live feed" and to remotely initiate recordings, but I find it most useful when replaying footage I have just captured. I can then make a quick decision whether to keep the clip and download it via Wi-Fi on to my phone/Ipad, which also saves the need to have a laptop or similar with me when space is limited.
Also if you are using it as a black box it can come in handy in the event of an accident and, without too much effort, make several copies for peace of mind.

Yeah mine is the standard one.

Should point out also - all the photos I upload from mine are taken at 5MP and also compressed to shrink the file size.

If you have extra memory cards to change over more frequently the SJ4000's can take photos upto 12MP, which are quite a lot crisper.

Not sure if it impacts the battery-life more at the higher resolution though.

Most of the newer batch ones now come with authenticity codes (the legit ones that is) so you can input that/scan the QR code on the official website and confirm its legit or not.

I got mine through ebay - some of the ad's now specify it comes with the code. This one for example (may be cheaper ones).
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Original-Genuine-SJCAM-SJ4000-DV-1080P-12MP-IP68-Waterproof-Sport-Camera-DVR-/172165323373?hash=item2815da5a6d:g:K~AAAOSwSzdXDOGj

Wouldn't want to 100% guarantee it even then, but I think that sort of ad is probably the safest bet.
