Oxford tailbag fitment, look ok?

General bike chat, The workshop or Touring and exploration.. I couldn't choose so here we are, apologies if in wrong section.

Keeping it short I've just purchased a Oxford tailpack to replace my very small (in capacity) and semi broken Lextek tailpack. Reason for the thread is that the Oxford tailpack has bungee straps + underseat strap and I just wanted to ask / provide pictures to ensure that the bungee straps look safe / securely mounted to ride with.

To me the base is really tight to the seat (the underseat strap was a little long so I just folded it over somewhat rather than cut / burn it to size). I pushed the bike around a little and couldn't feel the weight of luggage at all. Pushed the bag around side to side and nothing was moving. Luggage fills out bag nicely.

It looks like you've fitted it backwards.

The zips shoudl all close to the back of the bike. If they are the other way round, wind blast will undo them, resulting in your dirty grundies being liberally spread down the M1 *


*other motorways are available.

You sure? this is the image that is provided on the label and as the bag only has three outer pockets the one facing backwards confirms I've got it on the same way as in the picture. If I had it the other way round I'd have the rear pocket digging into my back. Also the main zip has a small pullover cover that I'd assume is waterproof / to tackle wind issue. Only zips that are exposed are side pocket ones.

Towards the front of the bike. Oxford / SBS / Amazon all show the same image with the bag the same way as I have it.

I've had problems with zips on jackets coming undone due to windblast. How do you think you are going to get on with those?

So that we're clear this is how it looks (sample picture from instructions). I understand what you're saying and pictures of other tail bags prove your point but are you sure that it's not just a bad design on this bags part? It's only the side pocket zips that are exposed as you can see the flap at the top covers the main pocket zip, rear zip is behind the bag and the small loop at the back bottom of the bag covers the connection zip.

It's the same on both sides. I just don't see, despite your point, how turning the bag around to have the pocket dig / rub against my back and the soft facing front facing rewards would make sense. The pictures / instructions all point towards the way I have it so can only say design flaw, food for thought though given I'd never taking that into consideration before.

Instructions did tell me I had the rear bungee straps secured the wrong way though so that was something. Not really convinced I like bungee's over underseat straps.

Providing that it stays in place I wont be all that bothered about how it looks. Bonus over my Lextek tail bag is that is has straps to be made into a backpack and also has far more space for shopping and whatever else.

Below is a picture of the bike I have, not mine.. pictures from google, you can see how far back the topbox mounting is and how the weight would be distributed.. I find keeping it central on the passenger seat rests easier with me.

Weight distribution is negligible, you'll be putting a few kilos at most in it the majority of the time.

Plus a top box is a lot more secure and waterproof.

Pro's and con's for each I suppose. Tail pack has just always worked for me thus far so don't need to change up just yet. About the only bit of luggage that I don't have though.. window shops Rolling Eyes Laughing .
