So,

I'm going to be moving in the Autumn, Sidcup/Dartford way and it being in the Greater London area I'm a little bit concerned about theft.

Any suggestions about bikes that wouldn't be considered as desirable from the scrotes point of view? I know supermotos are a definate no and I guess anyhting *sporty* is prob out too...

Its London, a wretched hive of scum and villainy. There is no "undesirable" bike for pikey cunts, and even if they cant nick the bike itself theyll nick whatever they can... came back to my bike after work last night, someone had tried to get into the topbox and failed, tried to remove the tankbag and failed, so they nicked the only thing Id left in my tankbag... a neck buff... wtf? Why... Just why would someone steal that? I can't think of any reason other than sheer petty vindictiveness - "how dare this person not leave any valuables for me to steal, I'm going to steal this buff anyway to minorly inconvenience them!"

Fucking cunts.

We need a new plague to wipe out this hellhole. Its a real shame ebola never caught on over here...

Ideally you don't want anything that's easily nickable or desirable, so I'd go for the cheapest bike you can find with an immobiliser. However I agree they'll steal anything, so you might as well buy a big chain for your CG.

Good luck!

Whatever bike you end up with you need to make sure that you have somewhere secure and out of sight to keep it locked up in preferably somewhere that will let you fit a ground anchor or something similar. Big thick chain rather than an Oxford cheese-link chain. Try to avoid Dartford if possible as it is mostly traffic jams, anger and feral children. There are some nice places around Dartford though Thumbs Up

I'm mainly going to be based in Sidcup, thats where my new college is...

I'm not sure whether I'll be taking the CG yet or whether I'm going to be finding something different.... should have my full license by then...

A cruiser styled 250 with chrome parts not polished or sprayed over, still people will take anything.

edit: any cruiser that isn't a harley or shiny and generally poor looking condition.

Heaviest bike you can get to deter lifting it away, 2 huge chains with good locks and ground anchored then through the frame.
Realistically you can't do much more to help.
I even used to use my old 16mm Pragmasis on my CG, didn't stop those morons from trying and failing to cut it though, bastards scratched my links! Sad (and increased my faith in Pragmasis chains)

I bet most of them can't work a kick start.

I don't mean like on a scooter. I mean like on something big with high compression that'll hurt you if you don't do it right.

So the dirtbike theft issue notwithstanding, I'd pay good money to see a ratboy trying to kick-start an XT600. It would keep getting nicked but be found round the corner on its side.

A diesel enfeild?

You're on pretty safe ground with a Jawa 350. Mine got stolen lots of times but they never could work out how to start it.

The small bikes get stolen more often than the big ones - so I wouldn't bring the CG.

Get a decent chain, and one of those £30 trackers.

I had a look at bike on ebay near me and the least desirable ones were 250's, 125's get taken a lot as they are in demand, big bikes get taken cos they are fun to ride or fast, a cruiser 250 isn't fast and isn't popular cos of license laws.

Sure people would take anything but I imagine people wouldn't bother if it looked like a piece of shit and was secured well. But then again, some thieves like a challenge and to nick things because they can.

Licensing laws aren't applicable if you've stolen the bike. Thumbs Up

going back a while there was this large woman in coventry who got her face in the paper as she had painted her XS250Se Pink with a tin of paint and a brush to deter theives, don't know if it worked, but the paint was fecking everywhere, sidewalls & all

T Max's seem quite popular pikey magnets at the moment. Handy for carrying tools and grinders for their thieving/football careers

I never had a problem with my Daytona 955i. Too big for chavs and too boring and old for organised thieves. Also in this same vein, FireBlade streetfighter, ZX9R Rat bike etc.

I'd be a little wary of survivor bias in determining nickability.

My neurotic side agree with you, but surely apparent cause and effect is all we can go off sadly?
I figure a loosely informed guess is better than a wild guess. Thinking
