Ellopeeps.

Going to start ringing round for the wife to get a CBT/insurance etc., and I'm a bit confused about the category on her licence. She's a 'Mercan, and been driving for a zillion years, but got her full UK car licence in 2005.

Her B category has the restriction of "01" - Eyesight correction, but under A it states "79(3),01". Now according to the Gov website :-

https://www.gov.uk/driving-licence-codes

79(3) means "79 - restricted to vehicles in conformity with the specifications stated in brackets on your licence"

I'm working on the assumption it means "provisional, upon the completion of a CBT" or words to that effect, but does anyone have a link to an official definition of what the "(3)" denotes exactly?

This is not to be confused with "79.03 - restricted to tricycles", which nearly every google search I've done bangs on about. There's nothing under A1 or A2 (AM has 122 - valid on successful completion: Basic Moped Training Course).

Found it.

Apparently 79(03) also means restricted to tricycles.

Now I'm slightly more confused, as I don't know whether her licence acts as a provisional for bikes. More googling required.

[edit] According to the "Routes to your motorcycle licence" flowchart :-

https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/369984/routes-to-your-motorcycle-licence.pdf

Category A, 24 or over, doesn't refer to a provisional at all under "no full A1 or A2" licence. Muddier, and muddier.

OK, running her details through the online licence checker :-

https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence

She has a provisional entitlement for category A. Cool, now to book a CBT...

As you were.
