What bike do you think has well? What didn't you like when it was introduced but now you think it's a bit of a looker? And of course, the opposite, what beauty do you now think is a minger?

One that I love now but was a bit 'meh' when it was released is the Ducati 999

I hated the SP1 when I first saw pictures, but now I think it's gorgeous. I think seeing it in the 'metal' as it were made a massive difference.

I think the mid naughties early teens GSXR's aren't going to age well, too fussy and not 'classic' looking.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

I think the ZZR has aged well, perhaps not as well as the Thundercat which, with it's mirrors up the screen a little bit looks a little more modern but compared to other bikes from the same era, it's not as dated

My friend's dad had a new one of these (BMW K1) and I remember thinking that it looked like the meanest/coolest/fastest looking bike I'd ever seen.

Ahead of its time. If it were released now, it would be much better accepted than it was in 2003. I don't think I'd buy an old one though. Too high maintenance. The 1098 is a much more capable and a more dependable bike. And lets face it, pretty much every Ducati sportsbike is a design classic.

The RC30 (and NC30) is still a timeless icon. If Honda re-released it today, even at Panigale R money, I suspect that it would sell extremely well.

In terms of sportsbikes this century, the sweet spot seemed to be 2000-2006. Specifically, the 98-01 R1, SP1/2, 04 ZX-10R and K5/K6 GSX-R1000 (which has aged much better than either earlier or later models). All designs that still look very desirable and cutting edge.

Later than that, the RC8R is growing on me:

https://images.motorcycle-usa.com/PhotoGallerys/63438064540833332511-ktm-rc8r-100.jpg

It's a very distinctive design, and like the 999, wouldn't look out of place as a new release today.

The FZR600 (non-foxeye) is a strange one. The front end still looks fairly acceptable by modern standards but that square rear makes me want to vomit.

This was my first big bike, lasted about a month before I flogged it.

Ducati Paso 750.

When I had this I loved the looks. (the actual bike wasn't Ducati's best offering it has to be said).

However, I don't think it has stood the test of time.

Well, I wouldn't say it was the most vile bike I had ever seen Laughing

But I do get your point.

You are absolutely bang on the money with that. I remember looking at it in red, thinking it was pretty fugly compared to the 998 it was replacing. But now. My word, that better be body-fluid-proof paint on the tank if I'm having a go. Embarassed

I don't think the 998 has aged anywhere near as well as the 999.

It's like it's a generation step behind. I know it is exactly that, but it looks like it too. I mean if you compare a 'blade with another either side they all look reasonably similar, but the 998 to the 999 was like a massive line. Drawn in permanent marker a few times so you could see it on the table under your paper.

It's almost as if Terblanche had a hotline to the god of design, who in turn had a time machine.

Agreed on the 7R. Will always be about the sexiest non exotic 750 sports bike of the era too. The SRAD is also looking pretty cool these days, but looked a bit dumpy and humpy when new.

Then I think bikes like the RF900 and Thunderace look better today than they ever did in the 90's. When the ace was new, I'd have had a far bigger hard on for a CBR1000F, as it just looked a bit cartoon silly back then.

I think the original 1998 R1 is still a good looking bike 18 years on.

It's also an iconic superbike that re-defined the late 90's> development path for everything to come.

Worth owning and then some, unlike a 2016 R1.

First saw that in the plastic at Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2003 (I think). And I nearly cried, it was so abhorrently ugly compared to the 916.

Fast forward to 2015 and one arrived at West End Cafe in Llandovery and I nearly mated with it. Stunning bike.

Stood the test of time. Norton Commando, would like one.

M900. Might be my idea of a perfect bike

Thought the S1000R was hideous when it came out. Now I want one.

This is one of the bikes that was ahead of its time and still looks fab: the Honda NR 750. Unfortunately not accessible to everyone

Most mid-late 80s sports bikes have dated quite badly, GSXRs excepted. Things like the jellymould CBR600s, early VFR750s, Kwak GPZ/GPX600s, etc all look rather naff today.
