My names Dennis, I have just bought a ZZR 600 but have a question regarding a GPZ 500s I just sold. Yesterday I sold my 1999 GPZ 500 in a private sale. The new owner's father suggests there are many faults. Generally being threatening and mouthy down the phone. He suggests the bike back fires and won't run properly, when he came to buy the GPZ I showed it him running and having the bike for 2 years I knew it to be a good bike. He declined a test ride and we loaded it into the back of the van.

I was at the back pushing the GPZ up the ramp, helped by himself and 2 sons. The GPZ hit the tail of the van with a slight thud, not cracking anything but we literally lifted it in the van and kept it on the side stand with plenty of bungees so it would not fall over.

The lad took it for a spin, says it needs oil as the oil light comes on when running although never did that when I had it. I think maybe the oil pressure switch got damaged during the pushing in the van. Also states the bike won't rev. Father giving a large portion on the phone threatening all sorts. I am sure I am being conned, or at least attempting to be conned.

My only thoughts are, maybe the carbs leaked petrol when on side stand into the oil, causing the oil to thin/and or dodgy pressure switch throwing light on. Or the lad has taken it out for a spin and thrashed it and killed it. Either way, where do I stand? what would other forum members do? father also states banging from engine?

Much appreciated for reading and any advice would be great. GPZ had 52000 miles on the clock.

private sale. tell him to do one. it was working when it left your possession (assuming you are being truthful)

if it was working, i'd say it is likely it was damaged in transit(on the side stand you say?) or his son has taken it for a ride and killed it. when it hit the van, did it hit the sump?

iirc the oil light is for a pressure sensor, not an oil level indicator. if no preshors in the system and they've been running the bike chances are its not getting the loob it needs and will go pop soon enough

just my 2p

Yes but they know where I live. He might come around and make good on his threat.

Yes it did hit the sump or the belly pan. Father suggests he has chased people to Spain before that have tried to con him, I could call his bluff but in all fairness I am not sure what to do. Father suggests the Police are useless and he will basically write me off. I could give him the "Listen you P***k, I don't own a f+++++g GPZ you do. don't ring me telling me that you are coming down, phone me when you have pulled up outside my house and guess what? I'll have something waiting for you and it won't be a f+++++g refund!"!. As I say, I am unsure what to do.

Why? The buyer already knows that and there's nothing to gain by texting him.

If you're concerned about threats he's made then report it to plod on their non-emergency number. Thumbs Up

He knows where you live but seems to have forgotten that you know where he lives. Wink

Tell him that if he bothers you again, you will call the police.

Caveat emptor and all that.

Don't make threats to call the police if he bothers you again.

If you're going to call the police then just call them.

Keep it simple.

Yeah, you have the v5c and his address, report him to the police, if you don't have a v5c then you are a conman and deserve fucking.

Already done that, thank you for the advice on that though. My friends are not too sensible hence me asking for advice and joining a biking forum. One mate suggests changing the surname to arse-bandit or gayboy or something equally offensive and another suggest running an online advert for the GPZ with the phone number of the person I sold it to and advertise is with a k*******d engine and spares and repair for £50 just to rile them. I'd rather ask sensible people!

Are you wanting the guy to make good on his threats or are you wanting him to fuck off and leave you alone?

The latter, just want him to go away. I am flabbergasted as to why this has happened though. Logically I can't see why anyone would threaten anyone else over a phone, why ring? just turn up and then the person has to deal with it there and then.

Also I sold a good bike, I used it every day, it ran fine, I can't see how leaving it on a sidestand and transporting it 18 miles would have broken it. Unless the fuel in the oil scenario happened?

As above, get in contact with police, block his number and forget about it, seen it a hundred times if he had any intention of coming to your house for whatever he would have turned up at your door in the first instance.
Private sale = no comeback.

I think they're trying to con you, lots of people try this. Sounds like the son came home and said 'look pa, look what I just bought'. Father kicks off as unhappy with purchase, wants money back and threatens you as he knows it's a private sale and there's bugger all he can do. Get the threats logged on the non emerency number, that way you cover your back should anything happen.

bungees stretch so I'm guessing it fell over in the back of the van when it went round a corner

If you owned the bike for 2 years, you should know the bike well by now. If you are satisfied in yourself that you sold them a good bike, or even a crappy bike at a good price, then your conscience is clear.

Got an android phone? Install a call recorder. Next time they call just tell them they bought a good bike for a reasonable price and they won't be getting any money back. If they threaten you further you have evidence, so go and see the cops.

If it's been over on its side, it could well be having issues. I'd suggest this is what has happened.

I'd go so far as to say it's probably been over on it's left side which has pushed the exhaust header pipe up against the outside of the oil pressure switch making the oil light stay on.

On the assumption it's been over on its side. It probably now has oil or fuel in the airbox and/or oil in the combustion chamber and is now running like a bagowank as a result.
