OK for the last few days I've been getting a bit of a knocking noise from the front end (very similar to the sound you would get from a warped disc), to begin with I thought it may have been a problem with the disc, but today in work I checked them and the calipers and they seemed fine.... so I got the bike upright and clamped the front wheel between my legs and tried moving the handlebars....

Trying to move them left and right and apart from my sparrow legs giving way there was nothing when pushing them to the left, but when I tried moving the bars to the right there was a couple of cm movement (at the bar end) and a definite clunk (not sure the correct term there).... so the bearings are f**ked on the right side of the wheel anyway.

Anyway, the whole point in this post, I've been having a look on ebay for bearings and since the dust seals seem fine and I'm only looking for the front wheel ones which will cost as little as £6 for the pair.... are they going to be complete shit?

I've only ever had to replace the bearings on my 125 (many years ago) and the mini-moto (from a few years ago), neither of which I remember how much I paid for the bearings.

So how much is reasonable for zx9r front wheel bearings?

I hate bearings, I've paid top money for them only to have them fail after 6 months and I've paid peanuts for them and last until the sale of the bike. The truth of the matter is, nobody knows. Just buy the cheap ones, if they last 6 months, it was £1 a month to learn they were dud.
with things like bearings, I generally go with cheap, and they seem to work out fine for me. I don't think I have ever replaced a cheap bearing that I have installed, only the expensive ones.
Maybe I over tightened them, maybe not, but the fact remains, the cheap ones kept on rolling just fine and dandy. Added to the fact that most of my wheel bearing changes have been on motocross bikes, they have taken a hell of a beating.

Measure the bearings or look the size up on Wemoto and buy SKF or similar quality from a bearing factor. Thumbs Up

seriously though, I'm still using the bike so can't get codes, but doing a search for ZX9R bearings throws up different years etc, the £6 ones were for a 99-03 model.... which is why I made this post.... that seems very cheap

Hi

Decent bearings carefully put in place should last well. But it is not difficult to make a mess of it (while a socket makes a good drift, a long extension bar through the bearings and into the middle of the socket can help locate it) if you are careless.

Cheap bearing might well last less time. Easy to change so in that way saving money is possible, but on the other hand the thought of a wheel bearing collapsing at speed is not appealing.

And if you want cheapies then a quick look suggests a 10 pack of 6004 2RS bearing for about £7.

All the best

Katy

The biggest fault I see from bearing changes is people raising a burr on the bearing seat when knocking the old one out. This causes the bearing to sit cocked and ruins the new item prematurely.

If you knock out a bearing with a drift - always inspect the seat afterwards. If you see a mark where your drift rubbed on the ally wheel it's almost certain that there will be a raised edge.
